word like that I didn't mean for you to use there--no, no, no.)

"Haven" is a safe shelter or harbor and looks like "heaven."

Personal info: when I play this game, I can't help but think, "Wouldn't it be
something if my Mom and Dad were around and I could show this to them?"  It's
sort of like a trip back to when they were young.  Not that they were in any-
thing like the Mafia, because they weren't.  So it's sort of like that.  Kind
of.  Sort of.

  Running the game on Vista

Vista users who want to make sure that their save games and configurations
show up in the main game folder should read the Microsoft article on "File and
folder Virtualization" at the next link.
  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927387/en-us

It instructs you to go to the C:\Users\User_name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\
MyApp folder.  But I didn't have AppData listed there by clicking my way through
the usual way (?).  So I put AppData in Start > Start Search and found it.

Then I used the rest of the article directions to go to Virtual Store, but I
didn't see a MyApp folder--I found two other folders: Program Files and Windows.

The Program Files folder had a folder called Mafia and in it was a text docu-
ment called log.

To have the save game and configuration settings files appear in the proper
place, the article instructs you to change the security settings on the folder
for the application:

   1. Log on as a user who has administrative credentials then go to the game
folder.
   2. Right-click the folder then click Properties.
   3. On the Security tab, click Edit.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type
your password, or click Continue.

   4. Under Group or user names, click your user account.
   5. Under Permissions for Users, click Allow for the following permissions:
          * Modify
          * Read & Execute
          * List Folder Contents
          * Read
          * Write
   6. Click OK

I ran the game as Administrator to use the initial little menu of options and
saved it.  I also right clicked the Desktop icon for the game, clicked Proper-
ties, clicked the Compatibility tab, checked the box for "Run this program in
compatibility mode for:" and used the drop down box to pick "Windows XP (Ser-
vice Pack 2)," then clicked OK.   Then the game ran normally.

Something more like the configuration I use for a Grand Theft Auto

I change some of the controls to the ones I use for a Grand Theft Auto.  But
to make this walkthrough more user-friendly, I'll refer to a control with the
general description if I don't use the default key for it.

Tap it twice and, whether Tommy is standing or
crouching, he'll do a side roll to the left.
Right                    D                  Walk or run to the right depending on which
you've set as the default with the "Toggle
run/walk" key--I have Tommy walk by default.
Tap it twice and, whether Tommy is standing or
crouching, he'll do a side roll to the right.
Walk/Run            Shift              While added to Forward, Left, or Right, it
changes his walk to a run or his run to a
walk.  Tommy also makes a "come here" whistle
at first when you press it.
Toggle run/walk  Num Enter     Set Tommy's default Forward speed to walk or
run.  I just changed it from Caps Lock be-
cause I don't like finding that I'm mainly

Fire                       LMB              You can briefly press the LMB to make Tommy
raise his gun and make the crosshairs appear
for a couple of seconds.  This let you have
him aim before he starts using ammo.
If you continue to hold down the LMB, he'll
keep firing his gun, reloading if possible,
firing, etc., till you release the LMB or he
                                                            runs out of bullets.
To have Tommy perform quick shots, such as with
a Shotgun: hold the Backwards key, then hold
the Fire key while at the same time pressing
the Jump key--you can make the weapon fire as
fast as you can tap the Jump key.

Mouse aim or driveby from a car and other controls

Mouse aim or driveby from a car

You can only use mouse aim, or use mouse aim for a drive by, in the three
"camera" views that position the "camera" above and behind the vehicle.  For the
other three "camera" views, the "camera" is in a fixed position.

To have Tommy use mouse aim, not shoot, from a vehicle, use one of the three
"camera" views that position the "camera" above and behind the vehicle and click
the LMB.  Revert to the default view by clicking the RMB.

I don't like looking sideways while trying to drive forward so I generally
didn't have Tommy do a driveby while having him drive.  But this is how you do
it:

To have Tommy shoot from the driver's seat of a vehicle, use one of the three
"camera" views that position the "camera" above and behind the vehicle, scroll
to the handgun you want to use, and press the LMB--cross hairs appear on the
middle of the screen.  You can move the crosshairs with mouse aim.  Tommy can
shoot if you aim the crosshairs somewhere to the left of the vehicle.

The same method works for those three "camera" positions if you press the key
to have Tommy look left.  You can have Tommy shoot while looking left and using
the other three "camera" positions, too, but the crosshairs can't be moved from
the center of the screen.

Press the RMB, the key to have Tommy look right, or both of the keys to look
backward, and he reverts to Empty Hands--if the vehicle has a window, he closes
the window.

Tommy can use a handgun, machine gun, or shotgun from the passenger side such
as when using the gimmick to have Tommy driven in Sam's car in "Just for Relaxa-
tion-The Trap" or be driven in the Trautenberg Model J in "Moonlighting-Lucas
Bertone 2."

  Save games

You get two save games for "Freeride Extreme," one for "Freeride," and one for
each saved section of a main story mission.  The most you can have is 116 save
games.

When you run the cursor over a save game, you can see Tommy's Health for it
from 0-100%, the date and military time of the save, and play time, which I
think is is the amount of time you played an uninterrupted session till when you
saved that mission.

  Screenshots and videos

The Prt Scr (Print Screen) key doesn't work for making screenshots for Mafia.
(By that method, you'd then open Paint and click Edit and Paste then Save the
screen shot.)

You can use Fraps to make screenshots and videos of your games.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraps
  http://www.fraps.com/

Fraps lets you use hotkeys.  You can take any number of screen shots at a
time, but the free version doesn't let you make make .jpg files, only .bmp
files which are a lot bigger.  To copy them as .jpg files, you can use the free
Easy Graphic Converter, then delete the .bmp files.
  http://www.etrusoft.com/graphic-converter/

The free version of Fraps restricts videos to 30 sec. clips.  Whether you use
the free version or not, the videos take up a lot of MBs which you can compress
to take up less hard disk space (and make them easier for your computer to use
with your editor later).  The free processing tool I use is VirtualDub.  I click
Video > Compression > XviD MPEG-4 codec and save them as .avi files.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub
  http://www.virtualdub.org/

  How I make videos

As described above, I capture the scenes on my PC with Fraps.  I use Virtual-
Dub, which is free, to compress the video clips to .avi files.

Other free software I've used includes the AoA Audio extractor (to extract
the audio from a clip or convert MP3s to .wav files, which Windows Movie Maker
prefers), Super (to convert most any file type to another), and Wavepad (an au-
dio editor I haven't used much).  I've also used the ZAMZAR web page to save
YouTube videos.

  http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
  http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html
  http://www.zamzar.com/url/

On Vista I edited the clips with Windows Movie Maker, which comes with Win-
dows Home XP and Vista Home Premium.  I use Windows Movie Maker to publish each
video to my computer  which lets you compress the video to the size you want.
See the Windows Movie Maker forum for more including many free user-made ef-
fects.

For Windows 7 and higher (I have Windows 10 as of 2016) you can download the
new Windows Movie Maker 12 for free.

If you're going to buy an editor, check the latest reviews.  Sony Vegas and
Adobe Premier Pro usually get good reviews.  Avidemux is free, but I just use
Windows Movie Maker.

  HUD and map

  HUD

Tommy's Health, 0 (death) to 100, is shown in a rectangle at the lower left
corner of the screen.

If Tommy holds a gun, an ammo rectangle appears to the right of the Health
rectangle.  The ammo rectangle shows Tommy's ammo by a pair of numbers.  The
left number of the pair gives the number of bullets in his current cylinder/mag-
azine/cartridge and the right number gives the number of bullets in his unused
cylinder/magazine/cartridge.

An exclamation point appears over the Health rectangle if Tommy can interact
with something by pressing the RMB.  Other status messages may appear there,
too, such as a rectangle that shows the Health, 0 to 100, of a mission compan-
ion, red letters indicating what kind of offense Tommy is wanted for, etc.

When Tommy enters a car to drive it, the name of the car appears briefly in
the bottom left corner of the screen.

  Radar

The radar is in the upper left corner of the screen when Tommy is in the driv-
er's seat of a vehicle.  The types of vehicles in Tommy's area are represented
on it with different colored short lines.

White (shown in the center of the radar):
                    Tommy in a vehicle

White (shown anywhere on the radar):
An unlocked vehicle: one of Tommy's other vehicles or that Tommy
                    hasn't found yet in "Freeride

  Green        A locked ped vehicle

Blue          A police car that isn't chasing Tommy.  A police car will react to
an offense by Tommy if it's anywhere from about halfway between the
edge of the radar and the middle of it and approaching the middle--
Tommy's position.  They won't react to an offense by Tommy if
                   they're driving away from him.

  Orange ("Freeride"):
A gangster car that isn't chasing Tommy

Red           A police or gangster car that's chasing Tommy

  Yellow      A trolley

Red X (blue X on the map):
Tommy's current destination or target vehicle

During "Fairplay-Victory," the radar also shows a basic outline of the nearby
part of the racetrack.

The speedometer, gas gauge, odometer, tachometer, indication of manual or
automatic transmission, and, when shown, the speed limiter are shown at the bot-
tom right corner of the screen when Tommy is in the driver's seat of a vehicle.

The currently selected gear is shown above the base of the speedometer needle.
Below the base of the needle of the speedometer is an odometer, which shows the
distance the vehicle has traveled.  The gas gauge is on the bottom of the speed-
ometer.  The gas level will go down fast if the engine is damaged.  A little
round red light appears if the tank is about empty or empty.

The smaller dial to the left of the speedometer is a tachometer, which you can
use if using a manual transmission.  It shows the rate of rotation of the engine
crankshaft in revolutions per minute.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachometer

The tachometer is used to know when to shift.  See the instructions for how to
shift with a manual transmission at the next links.

  http://www.10w40.com/individual/100186.asp
  http://www.ehow.com/video_3234_drive-car-with.html

The little round dial to the right of the bottom of the speedometer shows an
"M" or "A" to indicate whether the car is using a manual or automatic transmis-
sion.

As the game manual notes: "...by pressing the clutch and revving the engine
you can achieve a faster getaway from a stationary position.

"NOTE: By switching to manual control of the gears you have the option to
leave it in neutral with the handbrake off, this is shown in the gear display
window in the center of the speedometer by the letter "N". This can allow vehi-
cles to be moved without any resistance."

If you press F5 to limit the speed of the vehicle to 40 mph (60 mph after com-
pleting the main story missions), a yellow-orange diamond with "40" ("60" after
completing the main story missions) in black numerals appears above the right
side of the speedometer.  Press F5 again to remove the speed limit and the indi-
cator.

  Compass

The compass appears at the upper left side of the radar to point at Tommy's
destination (not the nearest road to take for the best route) when a mission as-
signs one.

  Pocket watch

When Tommy has a timed mission, a pocket watch appears in the upper right cor-
ner of the screen to indicate the time left in the mission.  For periods over
one minute, the time left in shown by a moving minute hand with the distance it
has to travel to 0 colored with a diminishing red slice except that the last
minute is shown instead by a moving second hand and the distance it has to trav-
el to 0 colored by a diminishing red slice. Just the latter is shown for periods
under a minute.

The amount of money Tommy has is shown in "Freeride" in the upper right corner
of the screen.

  Map (Tab)

gas stations (three orange triangles), elevated railway and stations (blue),
and trolley routes (yellow).

the "Lucas Bertone" segment of "A Trip to the Country."

****

  Police

The police wear blue uniforms and hats (except for undercover policemen in
long light brown coats who only appear in certain main story missions).

They don't appear in the country in "Freeride."  If you try to have Tommy lure
them there, they disappear when the country setting loads.

(The Mafia bought all the farms and killed them.  There are dead bodies in ce-
ment under a patch of turnips.  Some are afraid of the country in "San Andreas."
Why?  At least you can lure the police there.  There are no police in the coun-
try in "Freeride" in "Mafia."  If you go there late at night, you may see the
ghost of Al Capone raking his mulch.)

If Tommy's offense is seen by a policeman who's on foot, you'll hear a whis-
tle.  If his offense is seen by policemen who are in a vehicle, you'll hear a
siren.

The police on foot or in a police car only react to Tommy committing an of-
fense if they're pointed or going toward him.  They don't react to an offense by
Tommy while they're pointed or driving away from him.

To help Tommy prevent a policeman from seeing Tommy commit an offense while
he's on foot, you can have him look around the scenary for a police man or a po-
lice car that's pointed or coming toward him.  He can also do that while he
picks (RMB) the lock of a vehicle.

To help Tommy prevent a policeman from seeing Tommy commit an offense while
he's in a vehicle, you can try to avoid having Tommy commit an offense when a
blue line, indicating a police car, is anywhere from about half-way between the
edge of the radar and the middle of it and is pointed toward or approaching the
middle--Tommy's position.  The police don't react to an offense by Tommy while
they're pointed away or driving away from him.

The radar doesn't indicate policemen who're on foot.  If Tommy's in a vehicle,
you can either have him check out the scenary for police on foot by turning the
vehicle or by clicking the LMB and looking around with mouse aim if you're using
one of the "camera" views that positions the "Camera" above and behind the vehi-
cle.

You can also press F5 to limit the speed of Tommy's vehicle to 40 mph (60 mph
after completing the main story missions) so he doesn't go over the speed limit.

  Minor offenses

  - Going more than 40 mph (60 mph after completing the main story missions) but
not more than 70 mph (105 mph after completing the main story missions)

  - Going through an intersection despite a red light

  - Using a vehicle to lightly to moderately bump a pedestrian or another vehi-
    cle

If you have Tommy commit a minor offense and he's seen by a policeman, a tick-
et icon appears in the top middle section of the screen indicating that the po-
liceman is trying to serve Tommy a ticket.

If the policemen are in a police car, they chase and ram his vehicle.

If you have Tommy stop and get out of his vehicle to pay the policeman the
fine for the ticket during the main missions, it just adds to the appearance of
realism of the game--he doesn't have money for you to manage.  But if Tommy pays
for a ticket during "Freeride," he loses $1,000.

In the main story missions or "Freeride," if the ticket icon remains opaque
for a longer period of time, or if Tommy gets four tickets in a row, he's wanted
for arrest--a major offense.

  Major offenses

  - Going more than 70 mph (105 mph after completing the main story missions)

  - Showing a weapon except the Baseball bat

  - Being seen by a policeman after a minor offense for a longer period of time

  - Committing a minor offense for the fourth time

  - Using a vehicle to slam into another vehicle or kill a pedestrian

  - Lightly to moderately bumping a police car--slamming into a police car may
be a major offense or create police assault

If you have Tommy stop and get out of his vehicle to pay a traffic ticket
while transporting someone that openly carries a weapon other than the Baseball
bat, they get out of the car while Tommy does but the police don't mind that the
passenger is carrying a weapon.

If a policeman sees Tommy commit a major offense, a pair of handcuffs icon ap-
pears in the top middle section of the screen indicating that the policeman is
trying to arrest Tommy.  If they're in a vehicle, they'll ram Tommy's vehicle.

As with a minor offense, you can have Tommy get out of the policeman's view
and the icon becomes translucent.  If you have him get into another vehicle
without a policeman seeing him do it, the icon changes to the puzzled policeman
(see below).

If a major offense status persists for a longer period of time, other police-
men are called into the hunt and a wanted bar (see below) appears below the pair
of handcuffs icon.

If Tommy is apprehended while sought by the police for a major offense, he's
arrested and you fail the mission.

  Police assault

  - Firing a weapon

  - Attacking or killing a policeman

  - Slamming into a police car may be a major offense or create police assault

If a policeman sees Tommy commit one of these offenses or hears him fire a
weapon, a Colt 1911 icon appears in the top middle section of the screen indi-
cating that the police force, including officers on foot with S&W Model 10 M&Ps
and police cars containing officers with S&W Model 10 M&Ps and Pump-action shot-
guns, is trying to shoot Tommy.

If this status persists for a longer period of time, other policemen are
called into the hunt and a wanted bar (see below) appears below the Colt 1911
icon.  If Tommy tries to escape, roadblocks with two to five cars, armed police-
men, and one or two spike strips appear at every couple of intersections.

If you have him get into another vehicle without a policeman seeing him do it,
the icon changes to the puzzled policeman (see below).

If Tommy is killed you fail the mission.

  Puzzled policeman and wanted bar

  Puzzled policeman

If Tommy has gotten into a different vehicle after getting out of the sight of
the police after a policeman saw Tommy create one of the offenses of the several
categories above, the icon in the top middle section of the screen changes to
the head and upper body of a policeman with three question marks by his head.
If Tommy gets out of the vehicle in view of a policeman, his previous wanted
status is reinstated.

  Wanted bar

If Tommy is wanted for a longer period of time for a major offense or an of-
fense that creates a police assault, a red bar appears below the pair of hand-
cuffs or Colt 1911 icon.  More policemen join in the hunt as described in each
of those categories above.

If Tommy gets out of the view of all of the policemen, the icon becomes trans-
lucent and the red bar slowly gets smaller till the icon and the bar are gone.
If Tommy is seen by a policeman before the bar disappears, the icon becomes
opaque and the red bar becomes full again.

If Tommy gets into another vehicle without being seen by a policeman, the puz-
zled policeman icon replaces the pair of handcuffs or Colt 1911 icon.

Eluding policemen who are on foot

Most carry an S&W Model 10 M&P.  They blow a whistle and chase Tommy if they
see him commit an offense.  If Tommy has a wanted rating, it will get worse if
you have Tommy stay around them too long without doing something to end his
wanted status.

Since Tommy may be able to run away from some of them, you could have him
shoot any policemen that are close then run or jack a vehicle to get a couple
blocks away and out of their view, go around a corner, and jack a vehicle to
make the puzzled policeman icon appear.

If a trolley is handy, you can have Tommy ride on it because the police don't
enter a trolley.  You might get away with having Tommy go up a ramp to wait for
an elevated train and use it likewise because the police don't ride one of those
either and may take a while before making it up the ramp.  That may even give
you an advantage in being able to have Tommy shoot them.

The fastest thing to do is have Tommy shoot them.  If there's no other police-
man around and there isn't a wanted bar, and Tommy isn't killed, the wanted icon
will disappear once the officer is dead.

To have Tommy shoot more rapidly, notably with a Pump-action shotgun, hold
down the key for Backward then hold down the key for Fire as well and he can
fire as quickly as you can add presses of the Jump key.

If Tommy is in a vehicle when he creates a minor offense and you want him to
elude a policeman that's on foot, you can just have Tommy keep driving.  Once
Tommy's gotten out of the sight of the policeman, The ticket becomes translu-
cent.  When the ticket disappears, it indicates that the policeman has given up
the chase.

To make a more serious wanted rating disappear, you could have Tommy run over
the police man, or get a good distance away and turn the left side of his vehi-
cle toward the police man then do a driveby (scroll to a handgun then click the
LMB), but it would be easier to have Tommy get out of the vehicle to shoot them.

Eluding policemen who are in a car

Policemen in cars appear in pairs.  Early in the main story missions they ap-
pear in a Schubert Six Police, later a Schubert Extra Six Police Fordor or Schu-
bert Extra Six Police Tudor.  They're armed with S&W Model 10 M&P handguns and
the officer in the passenger seat may have a Pump-action shotgun.  From "Elec-
tion Campaign" on they respond to police assault with a pair of officers with
Pump-action shotguns in a Lassiter V16 Police car.  Tommy is better prepared to
handle them if he gets some distance from the shotguns and uses a Thompson 1928
or at least a Colt 1911.

If Tommy's on foot when policemen in a car come after him, have him wait till
the car is stopped nearby and the policemen begin to get out of their car.  Have
Tommy shoot the officer that comes out of the facing door and hasn't had time to
shoot, then have Tommy crouch and move to bring the other officer comes into
view and shoot him.

If Tommy's position relative to the car makes it convenient, such as if Tommy
is facing the side of the car and can shoot across or through the windows of the
car, or he's far enough away from the front or back to get a clear shot at the
area by each of the two doors, you may be able to have Tommy stay in one area
and shoot one officer then the other as they get out of their car and haven't
had time to shoot.

If Tommy's close to the police car, the officer who comes out of the passenger
side with the Pump-action shotgun is the bigger concern.  If Tommy's position
makes it convenient, have him shoot that officer as he comes out of the car and
hasn't had time to shoot.  Otherwise, have Tommy shoot the driver as he gets out
of the car, then have Tommy take cover or keep enough distance so the Pump-ac-
tion shotgun isn't as effective and shoot the officer who has the shotgun.

If Tommy is in a vehicle that's pursued by policemen who are in a vehicle,
they'll ram his vehicle with theirs and try to run him off the road.  Have him
drive to nearly miss things with the left side of his car to cause the police
car to run into something and be stopped, have Tommy get out of his vehicle to
get them to come out of their vehicle, then use the methods used when Tommy's on
foot described above to shoot them.

(Thanks to Bloviator's research on police for some of the information in the
section above.)
  http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/371671/37141

You might plan ahead and have Tommy place a vehicle out of the sight of the
police, such as in an alley, then have Tommy use another vehicle to commit the
offense nearby.  If you're used to Grand Theft Auto, you might consider that
like having a vehicle in a nearby Pay 'n' Spray, ready to take away a wanted
rating when your lead character gets into the vehicle, before having your lead
player get a wanted rating.  Then keep Tommy in the vehicle that's in a se-
cluded place until the wanted rating disappears, and it will disappear whether
the police on foot or in a car see him or not.

At the next link, codebusters has Tommy's car lightly bump a police car to
create a minor offense, elude them till the ticket symbol is replaced by the
puzzled policeman symbol, get out of his car, and run about 20' behind his car.

When the police car catches up, it parks, and while the police get out and run
to Tommy's car, Codebusters has Tommy run to the police car, pick the lock, and
steal it.  Then codebusters parks with the driver's side door against a wall,
and the two policemen takes turns throwing each other out of the passenger side
before codebusters has Tommy drive away with a policeman in the passenger seat.

  Vehicles

  Obtaining Cars

Much of the following information is from the Lost Heaven Courier in the game
manual.

Tommy is provided with a Falconer Yellowcar, a taxi, at the start of the main
story missions and the start of "Freeride."

For most of the main story missions, Tommy is provided with a car, and a les-
son in how to steal it, from Ralph, the Salieri family's mechanic.  Most main
story missions also contain an option to do a favor for Lucas Bertone of Lucas
Bertone's auto service shop--see the Map (Tab).  He shows his gratitude for fa-
vors done by showing Tommy how to steal a car and where he can steal another
example of the same car.

When Ralph or Lucas Bertone show Tommy how to steal a make and model of car,
Tommy learns how to jack or pick the lock of that model and sometimes other mod-
els of the same make.  As the years go by during the course of the game, more
modern and powerful cars become available.

As the main story missions are completed and vehicles are unlocked that way,
more vehicles become available for "Freeride."

Tommy is rewarded with a special vehicle, not seen driven by predestrians, for
succeeding at each mission of "Freeride Extreme," which is available by either
completing all the main story missions or trying to open a secret door (see the
section on "Freeride Extreme").  Once Tommy is rewarded with a "Freeride Ex-
treme" vehicle, that vehicle (in one case it and several other vehicles) then
becomes available for "Freeride."

The main story mission vehicles can also be made available for FR by having
Tommy try to open a secret door--see the section on "Freeride."

Car Theft Rises to all time high!

To have Tommy steal a vehicle, have him stand next to the driver's door and
hold down the right mouse button.  The time it takes to unlock a vehicle depends
on the make and model.  A progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen--when
it's full, the vehicle is unlocked.  If you release the right mouse button while
Tommy tries to pick the lock of a car, he stops and the progress bar is emptied.
Once the door is unlocked, press the RMB and Tommy will get into the driver's
seat.

It's also possible for Tommy to carjack vehicles that are being driven on the
streets by the citizens of Lost Heaven once they're stopped.  If the vehicle
isn't stopped by a traffic light or traffic jam or such, it will stop if Tommy
stands in its path for at least a couple of moments (if there isn't that much
time, the vehicle will hit him and he'll be injured or killed).

To have Tommy jack it, have him go to the driver's door and press the RMB--
Tommy opens the driver's door and throws out the driver.  (You can also have
Tommy use this method at passenger doors to throw out passengers, such as for a
Taxi fare he wants to get rid of.)  Press the RMB again while he's by the driv-
er's door and he gets in the driver's seat.

You will only be able to jack or pick the lock of a vehicle in the main story
missions if the game has made the vehicle available (Falconer Yellowcar), or
Ralph or Lucas has previously shown Tommy how to steal a particular make and
model making it, possibly other vehicles of that make, available, or you type
the code "cornufse" to let Tommy jack or pick the lock of any vehicle.

Tommy will only be able to jack or pick the lock of a vehicle in "Freeride" if
the game has made the vehicle available (Falconer Yellowcar), or the vehicle has
been made available by doing main story missions, or if you have Tommy try to
open a secret door (see the section on "Freeride"), or you type the code
"cornufse" to let Tommy jack or pick the lock of any vehicle.

Tommy can jack or pick the lock of any vehicle in "Freeride Extreme" except
for vehicles that he can be rewarded with for succeeding at FRE missions, which
he either can't use or doesn't need to steal.  That's because, aside from making
FRE available with the secret door gimmick, FRE becomes available by completing
the main story missions, so FRE counts it as though you made all the vehicles
available that can be made available by doing the main story missions.

NOTE: Stealing cars is an offence, so be aware of patrolling police nearby.
(See the section on "Police.")

Some drivers will not be happy when Tommy tries to steal their vehicle and may
retaliate by punching.  In a minority of cases, the driver has a weapon.  If so,
it's either a Baseball bat or a Colt Detective Special, the worst handgun of the
game.

  Ralph's Garage

Vehicles that you have been provided with by Ralph or have stolen during the
course of the game will be parked in the "Garage," which is actually the lot or
garage, behind the Salieri Bar at the start of a mission.  The vehicles that
will be stored are those from Ralph (even if they are discarded in the city dur-
ing a mission), vehicles that you have left in the yard during the course of a
mission and vehicles which are being used when a mission is completed, but does
not end by returning to Salieri's Bar.

If a vehicle is destroyed during the course of a mission it will be lost and
not available in the Garage for a subsequent mission.

At the end of each mission a menu will be displayed to show you the vehicles
that have been added to the "Garage" (actually the lot and garage) and those
that have been discarded or destroyed.  Only so many vehicles can be stored in
the "Garage."  If there is no more room then you'll be given the option to dis-
card vehicles (including vehicles that Tommy obtained during a mission) to make
room for a vehicle that Tommy obtained or is currently driving.

If you have Tommy speak to Ralph during the course of a mission aside from
when he wants to show Tommy how to steal a car, you will be presented with a
menu allowing you to discard vehicles from the lot and garage.

The prevalence of turn signals on cars in the game may be anachronistic.  See
the Wikipedia article at the next link.

Better cars early in the game

Lassiter V16 Charon--a hearse with a roll bar but no roof for protection dur-
ing fire fights; heavy weight can be good for a chase; it has a coffin in the
back; there's one in front of the church in "The Priest."
  Schubert Extra Six

Better cars in the middle of the game

Silver Fletcher (fast hard top, one of the best cars to save)
  Guardian Terraplane
  Thor 810 Sedan FWD
  Ulver

Better cars later in the game

Lassiter V16 Fordor or Police (fast, hard top, heavy)
Bruno Speedster 851 (seats one, no top, so avoid roll overs and bullets)
Celeste Marque 500 (good roadster, similar to Bruno except soft top)
  Caesar 8C Mostro (no top)
  Trautenberg J (no top)
  Thor 812

  Race cars

  Better cars in FR/FRE

HotRod (fast, good handling, also used as a taxi)
Luciferion FWD (fast, good handling, also used as a taxi)
Crazy Horse (fastest car, wheelies too easily, good for stunts)
  Black Metal 4WD (armored car)
  Masseur Taxi (good taxi)

  Real names of vehicles

Bolt Ace                           1920-1925 Ford Model T

I'm not sure of the years of the Fords that Mafia recreates, but one design
clue indicating Fords of the 1920's is the replacement of the 1910's boxy engine
hood with a larger one that sloped and narrowed from the dash to the grill.  A
clue indicating the Fords aren't from after 1925 is that the sloping and narrow-
ing is a bit greater compared to that on longer models from 1926 onward.  I also
tried to match the slant of the roof of the cab.  As a casual observer, I defer
to someone that's more familiar with Ford history.
  http://mafiagame.wikia.com/wiki/Bolt_Ace
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Model_T

Tommy's memories begin in 1930, so I guess most of the Bolt Aces are Fords
that had been owned for 5-10 years.

The years of Fords for the next batch just represent the years of the models
shown in the videos.  Similar models may have been produced for more than one
year.

Advice on turning a car at 50-95 mph by kill_everybody:

  1. When about one meter from the corner, turn into the corner
  2. As soon as you've turned into the corner, tap the hand brake
  3. Turn out of the corner and hit acceleration for a split second
  4. Turn back into the corner and hit the hand brake

Nine times out of ten you can make a 90 degree turn and came out of it at 40-
70 mph.  (Thanks to the MafiaScene.com forums.)

As I explain in "Glenster's Guide to GTJ Brooklyn," JWs president Judge Joseph

mansion he bought for himself.  (It's mentioned at listings for 1918 and 1929 on
the timeline at the next link.)

How to get a Ford Thunderbird, including early in the main story missions

The Bolt-Thrower Red is a late 1950's style car, similar to a 1957 Ford Thun-
derbird, which is red with a white roof.  The Bolt-Thrower Red can go pretty
fast and has good handling, but it has a soft top, so be careful to not let Tom-
my roll over (he may die) or get shot at while driving it.  It's also the car
the gangsters get out of before shooting Tommy near the end of the game.

"Bolt Thrower," like "Appolyon," is one of several names in the game that
comes from the name of or lyrics by a heavy or black metal band (thanks to Blo-
viator).  According to Wikipedia, the name of the band Bolt Thrower, in turn,
comes "from a weapon in the popular tabletop strategy game Warhammer Fantasy
Battle," which is published by Games Workshop.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolt_Thrower
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_Fantasy_Battle
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_Workshop

The names of the racers Tommy has to compete with in "Fair Play" are of mem-
bers of Death Metal bands (thanks to Bloviator).
  http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/371671-mafia/faqs/37141

One is Kirk Windstein, and I've been told that my last name, "Winstein," comes
from the German name "Windstein."

To get the Bolt-Thrower Red, have Tommy get on the West Marshall Bridge that
connects the Work's Quarter to Central Island.  Have him face east toward the
octagonal light gray tower, which has a dark gray window near the top of each
side, that's beside the north side of the bridge, and have him shoot the west
dark window until the screen goes dark for a fraction of a second.  Then send
Tommy to the alley on the north side of the west end of the East Marshall Bridge
to get the Bolt-Thrower Red.
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boO_DFnd7V0

It's available in all three city modes and the main story missions--an early
one is "Molotov Party."  You can also get a Bolt-Thrower Red from succeeding at
the second mission of "Freeride Extreme"--"The Invisible Man."
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vtHiBmCbIg
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oNtSJb3xSE

Some people complained that there's a lot of slow driving in Mafia--that even
when more powerful vehicles are available in the last part of the game, they're
restricted to driving at 40 mph with the speed limiter (F5) on.

If you'd like to know what it's like to have Tommy Angelo drive more like Tom-
my Vercetti in "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," see the speed runs at the next

You can have Tommy get a Bolt-Thrower Red as early as mission 03-03 Molotov
Party-Morello's Bar and he'll have a vehicle that can easily outrun the police
cars.

Gas stations, Lucas Bertone's auto service shop, and free "Freeride" repairs

  Gas stations

There are three working gas stations (the one in front of the Clark Motel
isn't interactive).  Each one is indicated on the Map (Tab) by an orange trian-
gle.

  - One is a block north of the west end of the West Marshall Bridge.

  - One is on a corner a little more than halfway up the west coast road of Cen-
tral Island.

  - One is a couple blocks northeast of the 2nd "N" of "DOWN TOWN."

To have the gas station attendant give Tommy get a tank of gas for his vehi-
cle, have him, facing the gas station, enter it on the right side and park with
the pump to the left of his vehicle and so an exclamation point icon appears in
the lower left corner of the screen and press the RMB to make a menu appear.
Left click the choice "2. Refuel" to get a tank of gas.

Tommy can't use a gas station if he's wanted by the police.

In "Freeride," a full tank of gas costs $500 and can go into negative dollars
(thanks to Bloviator).
  http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/371671-mafia/faqs/37141

As in "Vice City," you can have Tommy shoot a working gas pump to make it blow
up.  Tommy Angelo can also do it by running over a pump with a vehicle.

  Lucas Bertone's auto service shop

If the gas level of Tommy's car is decreasing rapidly, his car has been dam-
aged and is leaking fuel.  In "Freeride," it costs $2,000 to have the vehicle
fully repaired.  His shop is by the east end of the Giuliano Bridge and is shown
on the Map (Tab).

   Free "Freeride" repairs

In "Freeride," Tommy can get a free repair by driving from the city to the
country or visa versa and causing the game to load a new setting and a damage-
free version of his vehicle.

  http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/371671-mafia/faqs/37141

As mentioned in the HUD section, if Tommy holds a gun, an ammo rectangle ap-
pears to the right of the Health rectangle.  The ammo rectangle shows Tommy's
ammo by a pair of numbers.  The left number of the pair gives the number of bul-
lets in his current cylinder/magazine/cartridge and the right number gives the
number of bullets in his unused cylinder(s)/magazine(s)/cartridge(s).

After Tommy fires the last bullet of his current cylinder/magazine/cartridge,
he reloads.  An entire cylinder/magazine/cartridge of bullets is deducted from
the right number and added to the left number.  Tommy loses the bullets of a re-
jected cylinder/magazine/cartridge.

If the reloading is interrupted (you switch Tommy's weapon as he's about to
reload or you have him kill an enemy as they're about to reload, etc.), you can
get a count of zero for the equipped cylinder/magazine/cartridge of the weapon.

How to carry and conceal weapons

Weapons, aside from fists, are small or large.

Tommy has five places for small weapons and one place for a large weapon in
his jacket or pockets.  Have him carry, at the most, five small weapons and one
large weapon if you want him to be able to conceal all of his weapons.

If you have him carry two large weapons, he'll have to hold the second large
weapon in his hands and won't be able to conceal it.  He'd be running the risk
of occasional police detection, but you could have him drop it and pick it up as
needed.  You'll be annoyed if you work hard on a mission then fail it because
Tommy got busted for that, though.

If Tommy is carrying two large weapons, one has to be equipped, so if you have
him equip a small weapon, he'll drop the large weapon that was equipped.

Having Tommy get weapons from others

You can have Tommy fight with motorists, policemen, and gangsters to get weap-
ons.

A small percentage of regular pedestrian motorists have a weapon.  If they
have one, it's probably a Baseball bat but might be a Colt Detective Special.

Most policemen on foot carry an S&WModel 10 M&P, and policemen in a police car
are armed with S&W Model 10 M&P handguns and the officer in the passenger seat
may have a Pump-action shotgun.  The pair of officers who appear in a Lassiter
V16 Police car from "Election Campaign" on for police assault carry Pump-action
shotguns.

In "Freeride," a gangster that's on foot is armed with a Thompson 1928, and
pairs of gangsters in a car are armed with two of the following weapons: a Colt
1911, an S&W Model 27 Magnum, or a Sawed-off shotgun.

When Tommy collects a weapon from a fallen enemy that's identical to one he
has, the ammo of the unused cylinder(s)/magazine(s)/cartridge(s) accumulates.

  Yellow Pete's gun shop

Yellow Pete's gun shop is available during "Freeride" and during one main mis-
sion: "Moonlighting."  It's behind the door on the side of the Twister Theater
which faces a parking lot.  The Twister Theater is southwest of the "H" of "HO-
BOKEN" on the Map (Tab) on the long dead end road in Hoboken.  You can have Tom-
my take a shortcut straight to the gun shop over the walk from the road due west
of it.  The weapons sold there during "Freeride" are the ones listed above which
have prices.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoboken,_New_Jersey

Yellow Pete isn't present at his gun shop during "Freeride," but Tommy meets
him in the 19th main story mission, "Moonlighting," and you ought to have Tommy
visit him before the big shoot-out in the last main story mission, "The Death Of
Art."

How to increase Tommy's rate of fire

This method works with any gun, but it's most helpful in allowing you to have
Tommy rapidly fire eight shots with his Pump-action shotgun.  (Otherwise, only
the gangsters wielding Pump-action shotguns in "Freeride" can do it as quickly.)

Hold the Backwards key, then hold the Fire key while at the same time pressing
the Jump key.  You can make the weapon fire as fast as you can tap the Jump key.

****

  Dogs head

The easiest way for Tommy to get a Dogs head is to spawn one with "Mafia Hack
v1.03" (see the "Mods" section).  Otherwise:

Tommy can use a Grenade, or shoot the engine area of a car, to create an ex-
plosion that beheads a dog, a Boxer.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_%28dog%29

The most convenient way to have Tommy create the explosion is to give him a
Grenade with a weapon spawner.  You can use "Mafia Hack V1.03" for that.

Have Tommy go to the Dogs head and the exclamation point icon appears in the
bottom left corner of the screen.  Have Tommy right click it and the message
"Dogs head collected" appears in the bottom left corner.  The Dogs head becomes
another category in the Inventory under "Hands" and it's listed under Items as
"Dogs head."  It's probably based on a visual/verbal pun--when used, the head of
the Boxer becomes a boxing glove on his right hand.

"Playing with dog's head" by DarthMnich47
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVGpR137JLI

In mission 04-03 Ordinary Routine--Clark's Motel, there's a Boxer behind the
motel.  If you have Tommy shoot the center of one of the wheels of the yellow
Lassiter so the wheel falls off, he doesn't need his car because there won't be
a car chase.  You can have him park his car behind the motel and use the Thomp-
son 1928 to blow up the car to kill and behead the Boxer.

In mission 10-03 Omerta-City 2, there's a Boxer on the same museum entrance
walk as Little Tony.

In mission 13-03 Bon Appetit!-After The Attack, there's a Boxer in an alley
beside Pepe's Restaurant.

In mission 17-04 Election Campaign--Prison Tower, there are four Boxers in the
lot Tommy goes through between the exit door of the prison and the gate to the
street.  You can use a weapon spawner to give Tommy a Grenade to kill and behead
one or more Boxers.

In mission 20-05 The Death Of Art--Grand Finale, if you have Tommy take Lucas
Bertone's tip and steal a Thor 812 Cabriolet FWD, you have Tommy shoot the lock
off one of the two wire gates with red posts at the used car lot in Chinatown
(it's on the south end of the triangular block on the east side of Chinatown).
There are four Boxers in the lot.

In the "Epilogue," there's a picture of a Boxer on the lower right corner of
the fourth and last front page of a newspaper shown.  You can glimpse a Boxer on
the lawn across the street from Tommy during the last shot.

  The Dogs head ped

On rare occasions, a pedestrian appears with a Dogs head instead of a human
head.  (According to "Mafia Observations" by AsaSK, the construction site in Ho-
boken in "Freeride" is more liable to produce the Dogs head ped, but I think
it's probably equally likely to appear anywhere peds appear.)

"Mafia bug - pedestrian with dog head" by Brian19cz
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gyr2pxK8-c

  "Mafia dogs" by Theft2
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B5b5tv6N3M

The intended connection might be that Tommy wore the Boxer Dogs head as a box-
ing glove when he punched a ped in the head and the dogs head, cartoon-style,
replaced or covered the ped's head.

The code "Boxer" makes Tommy's hands and weapons, and the Dogs head boxing
glove, bigger.

****

  Miscellaneous basics

Tommy can't swim.  Whether he's on foot or in a vehicle, if you have him get
into the river, he dies and you fail the mission.  He drowns sometimes if you
have him get onto the dock northwest of "Downtown" on the map, for some reason--
I don't know what triggers it to happen when it does.

Peds who don't have any special purpose for interacting with Tommy, such as
all the peds in the Tutorial, have pretty anti-social things to say, including,
"I don't have time for this sh*t."

When you hold the LMB to power up the Baseball bat, it's supposed to create a
one-hit knockout when you have Tommy strike with it, but some peds just react by
crouching until Tommy hits them a number of times.  A nearby ped may scream and
run away till they run to a standing ped, then they'll just stand there, too.
(Short attention span, I guess: "He's trying to kill me!" "Oo, isn't that an in-
teresting fedora?")

You can have Tommy use the Baseball bat to damage a cylindrical metal contain-
er such as a trash can, but the bat may bounce off it and damage or even kill
Tommy.  (I once had that happen to him when he hit a phone booth, which is sup-
posed to break apart.)

Tommy can use a vehicle or weapon to break a fire hydrant and make water spurt
from it for a while.

Watch for vehicles when you have Tommy cross the street--vehicles will only
stop for him if you have him stand in their path for a couple of moments.

It's risky to have Tommy take cover behind a vehicle in a shoot-out because
the vehicle may be shot enough to blow up.

You may need to have Tommy shoot the side window of a vehicle several times
before the window breaks away and lets a bullet go through.

Tommy can shoot vehicle tires to flatten them or shoot the center of the wheel
three or four times to make it fall off.  The wheels can also come off if the
vehicle is damaged enough or explodes.

Tommy can use a vehicle or weapon to blow up the gas pumps in front of the
three working gas stations (not those in front of the Clark Motel), which are
indicated on the Map (Tab) by orange triangles.

I once managed to have Tommy climb onto the bed of the Bolt Ace Pickup by the
man on the guard rail of the Giuliano Bridge during "Fairplay."  I'm not sure if
Tommy could take a ride in one driven by a ped.

To have Tommy leave a vehicle with the engine running:

Stop the car so the exclamation mark appears in the lower left corner of the
screen, press "use"/RMB so the engine stops, use acceleration or reverse, and
when you hear the engine start, press "use"/RMB to have Tommy leave the car.
(Thanks to HAL10000 at the MafiaScene.com forums.)

Some of the good shortcuts to know:

  - the north-south alley east of Salieri's Bar

  - the west-east alley east of the 90 degree bend in the road east of the east
end of the Giuliano Bridge

It's only useful for going west to east because it has five drops (three about
8', one about 7', and one about 9') going west to east.  It has a couple of
guard rails across it that break away if Tommy runs into them with a vehicle.

Tommy can continue east from that shortcut to go across the street and go east
through an alley.

  - the east-west walk through the Hoboken construction area

It's about a block south of the shortcut with five drops.  If you send Tommy
east from the east end of the Giuliano Bridge, have him take the fourth right
then go left over the walk.  It's due east of the Twister Theater where Yellow
Pete's gun shop is.

Tommy can continue east from that shortcut to go across the street and through
an east-west alley.

  - The north-south walk between the south end of the dead end road the Twister
Theater is on to the road south of that in Hoboken

  - the two sets of steps and the walk that go east-west east of the circle
south of the "D" of "OAKWOOD" on the Map (Tab)

  - the northeast-southwest alley on the north side of the west end of the West
Marshall Bridge

  - a pair of east-west shortcuts, one on either end of an east-west stretch of
road, which I'll describe going west:

A bit south of the T-intersection south of the "U" of "WORKS QUARTER," go west
through an alley, a lot, and an alley, continue west on the street to the T-in-
tersection at the end of the street, go across the street a bit to the right,
knock down the two gray doors, and continue west through the lot and narrow al-
ley to the street.

  - the east-west alley west of the northern east-west section of the mostly one
lane block of the Works Quarter

There's a north-south alley midway across the north side of that alley, too.

Gimmicks, glitches, Ghost World, and jumps

How to have Tommy slide down a wall by tntlink

You can have Tommy walk into a wall as he walks off a ledge so he might slide
down instead of fall.  (I got the tip from a video by tntlink, but the video has
been disabled.)

This can come up in the mission "The Whore" if you use the gimmick of having
Tommy walk on a narrow ledge around a building to avoid a police attack--you
have him walk against the building as he goes over the narrower ledges so he
won't fall.  (See the video by cHIKO700 at the next link.)  Having Tommy walk
into the wall can make him adhere to it a bit better.  If he slips from the
ledge and you have him keep walking into the wall, he'll probably slide to the
ground.
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ2G0LOGROI

This can also be useful if you have Tommy try a gimmick to get ito Ghost World
and want him to descend to the ground without getting killed.

How to send Tommy's car flying

Lembox' video at the next link show's how in "Omerta" you can drive Tommy's
'57 Ford into the corner phone booth near the parked car Frank is kept in to
have Tommy's car spin into the air.  I don't know what percentage of the time
it works but Lembox repeats it so it isn't a one-time glitch.  He compares it
to the GTA "IV" swingset glitch.

  Looney Tunes fall by 0rland0walkthrough

0rland0walkthrough shows that you can have Tommy make pedestrians do the kind
of fall Wile E. Coyote or such makes only after realizing they're not over
ground.  Have Tommy honk the horn of his vehicle by a ped that's close to the
shore--the ped backs off over the water and are suspended for a moment before
they fall.

You can try it while having Tommy drive south along the coast from Lucas to
Dick in 19-05 Moonlighting-Lucas Bertone.  See one of the videos 0rland0walk-
through made for "Moonlighting" at 4:06 and 6:10 at the next link.

Voice from the overhead ped tunnel by the East Marshall Bridge

At gamefaqs.com in Underground's "Mafia Easter Eggs FAQ" it says that you can
have Tommy shoot at the pedestrian bridge/tunnel that goes over the street and
between two buildings near the east end of the East Marshall Bridge to hear a
weird voice.

I can't get it to work.  I bet johncena1 has the explanation--he pointed out
to me at the mafiascene.net site that it may be something just used for the
Czech version of the game.

If you have the Czech version, you can find the Easter Egg explained by Cole
Phelps at the mafiascene.net site.  He reported that he could create it by hav-
ing Tommy shoot the third window, north to south, of the top floor (beige
colored) of the southern building of the two connected by the bridge/tunnel.
This causes the screen to go black for a moment then the game to play the audio
of someone (head developer Daniel Vavra?) in Czech saying:

"No název je to docela dobrej no, ona je to dost sraeka, ale na tom nezálezí,
protoze reklama se udilá tak jako tak a lidi si to stejni koupij."

  Cole's English translation:

"Name is quite good, it is quite shit, but it´s not important,? because adver-
tising will be done and people will buy it, though."  (Thanks to the Mafia-
Scene.com forums.)

  Google Translate gave me:

"Well the name is quite good, well, she is pretty shit, but it did not matter,
because advertising is bloated anyway and people have the same koupij."  For
"koupij" it suggested "koupi" which is Czech for "purchase."

The video by DarthMnich47 at the next link has Tommy, facing west, use a ma-
chine gun to shoot the third window from the right of the pedestrian bridge/tun-
nel to get the same Easter Egg.  (Again, this just seems to be for the Czech
version.)

"Mafia Game - Police - bug" by codebusters

As mentioned earlier in the section on "Police," codebusters has shown that
you can have Tommy lightly bump a police car to create a minor offense and have
the police car pursue his car, elude the police till the puzzled policeman sym-
bol appears, and get out of his car to run about 20' behind it.  When the po-
licemen catch up and get out of their car to run to Tommy's car, you can have
Tommy pick the lock of their police car and possibly have him get away with
stealing it.

Then you can have Tommy park with the driver's side door against a wall, and
the two policemen takes turns throwing each other out of the passenger side.
You can have Tommy drive away with a policeman in the passenger seat.

  Ghost World

There are a lot of ways to have Tommy go to Ghost World (actually missing tex-
tures and collision files) in "Mafia."

The southeast part of the fence is non-solid at a car lot on the south side of
the block that's east of the block with "Ave" of "Market Ave" in Hoboken on the
Map (Tab).

During "Freeride," the gate at the back of the parking lot for Morello's Bar
(at the southeast corner of the block with "ARK" of "NEW ARK" on the Map--Tab)
is non-solid, and a non-solid red gate is in the front of the lot.

"Mafia The City of Lost Heaven How to get out of salieris bar" by Mafiafan12

In a main story mission, before Tommy drives from behind Salieri's Bar toward
the street, you can have him enter the Ghost World around Salieri's Bar.  Have
him park in the middle of the driveway just before the spot that causes the rest
of town to load up--with the front end of the car about a foot before the far
corner of the building on the left.  Have him park another car between that car
and a wall so Tommy can't exit his car normally.  After several efforts to have
him exit, he teleports to a spot in front of it and you can have him explore
Ghost World.

How to see a ghost taxi:

On the lot the instructor tells Tommy to drive to in the "Tutorial," the three
wedge-shaped ramps can be used for more than just jumps.  Have Tommy park the
Falconer Yellowcar on one then shoot one of the wheels off by shooting the cen-
ter of it.  A replacement wheels appears and the car goes forward most of a foot
every seven seconds or so.  It defies gravity going at the same upward angle
till most of it is beyond the ramp then it falls into the ramp as if the ramp
weren't solid.  It continues forward till Tommy gets into it or gets on it by
jumping from a nearby ramp or from nearby boxes.

How to make Tommy a ghost with a ghost car

Send Tommy into the construction area above a big "X" of roads, one of which
is the east-west road north of the name "DOWN TOWN" and the other road is a few
blocks north of the name "OAKLAND."  Have him go to a small gray building and go
through the brown ghost door to get into the blue-green Crusader Chromium Fordor
Blue.  There's a map by The King that shows the location most of the way down
the page at the next link.  (Thanks to the MafiaScene.com forums.)

visible, too.  See the video by RonaldLandor at the next link.

  Jumps

Have Tommy use a car with a hard top or he'll probably die if it flips.

Tommy can use the three stunt ramps of "Freeride Extreme" (see the section on
FRE) for jumps.  Have him use one of the faster cars, like a HotRod, to get
across the river.

Have Tommy go east to west on the West Marshall Bridge and either ramp from
the raised drawbridge or continue ahead and ramp off the steps and front wall of
the building.

"Mafia - The Ultimate Bridge Jump" by TKM96

There's a jump you can have Tommy make at the southern bridge of the two big
bridges in the north central part of the country (see one of the maps for the
country in the "Map" section).

To get there, have Tommy go north from the northeast corner of New Ark, go
left where the road divides after the airport, continue under the bridge, and go
to the T-intersection at the end of the road.  Have him go right to the bridge.
You can also have him go straight where the road divides after the airport then
go left where the road divides after the Clark Motel to get to the bridge.

At the northwest corner of the bridge there are three cylindrical metal con-
tainers Tommy can remove from a dirt lot by a steep cliff.  You can have Tommy
drive off the cliff and try to land safely on the shore across the river and a
long way below.  Some examples with a Black Dragon 4WD are shown by TKM96 at the
next link.
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhgiMv964FE

There's a little building south of the southeast corner of Downtown.  To the
west of it is a building with a ledge on the east side.  You can have Tommy
drive off the ledge into the water and drive in it--it's only about a foot deep.

  Codes

To enter a code, type it during the game and, if you entered it correctly, the
screen goes black for a fraction of a second before the code takes effect.  To
cancel the code, type it again.

  Code         Effect

boxer        ("boxer" in Czech)  Tommy has big hands.  His items and weapons
are big, too, while he holds them.

cornufse     ("cornu vse" is "I steal everything" in Czech)  Tommy can jack or
pick the lock of any car (only for v1.2)

cumdal       ("look further" in Czech)  Increase draw distance (only for v1.2)
Yay!  A good way to see the difference is to put in the code
while Tommy looks cross a river at a skyline.  It also adds de-
tails to certain things--it adds bits of reflection to caps in
                        the river, for example.

jizda        ("ride" in Czech)  The roof is removed from Tommy's car if it's a
                     soft top car

krefjezivot  ("blood is life" in Czech)  Tommy has full Health (it can only be
                        used once per mission)

municak      ("ammo man" in Czech) if Tommy has at least one full unused cyl-
inder/magazine/cartridge (the right number of the pair in the
ammo bar of the HUD) for a gun or guns he has or acquires the
amount of the unused cylinder(s)/magazine(s)/cartridge(s) won't
                         get lower.
If that's the case, when Tommy uses up the amount of his current
cylinder/magazine/cartridge (the left number of the pair in the
ammo bar of the HUD), he'll reload it.  Tommy will have infin-
ite ammo for that gun or guns.
It doesn't work for thrown weapons.

parnik          ("boat" in Czech)   Use the noclip function of "MafiaCon1.2" or
"Mafia Hack v1.03" (see the "Mods" section) for a better view:
another Tommy stands right behind the elderly lady pedestrian
who's in a long red-orange dress on the cabin of the boat that
regularly passes through the West River.  They have their arms
outstretched like Jack and Rose in the "I'm flying!" scene in
                         the 1997 movie "Titanic."
                         http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MDPeL8lpzo
                         http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic_(%281997_film%29

polifuck       ("field f*ck"" in Czech)  It didn't disable cheats or make wanted
levels disappear for me.  I don't know what it does yet.

rozmaz         ("smear" or "blur" in Czech) ?  It sounds like it might create
the FRE "Radial Motion Blur," but it doesn't.

  Profile

Before playing any of the missions, you give a name to a Profile for a set of
save games.  You can't delete individual save games, but you can add another
Profile and set of save games or delete a Profile and set of save games.  When
you start the game, you can pick which Profile you want to use.

  "Free Ride"

(Something to remember throughout the game: if you have v1.2 of the game, type
"cumdal" at the start of missions to improve draw distance.)

You can play "Freeride" while doing the main story missions, so I might have
covered either one first.  Normally, "Freeride Extreme" is made available by do-
ing all the main story missions, but I felt like using the gimmicks to let me do
FR and FRE first (sort of like doing the GTA sub-missions first then the main
story missions), so I cover FR and FRE first then the main story missions.

Tommy starts with a Colt 1911, S&W Model 27 Magnum, Sawed-off shotgun, Thomp-
son 1928, full Health, no money, and a Falconer Yellowcar, which can be used for
the taxi mission, in City-Small.  He can jack or pick the lock of a Falconer
Yellowcar and becomes able to do those things with other vehicles as he succeeds
at the main story missions.

As other vehicles become available from playing the main missions of the game,
you can choose the vehicle maker, the specific model, and, if available, which
color except for the last color listed due to a glitch.  If you want Tommy to
have the vehicle in the color unavailable due to a glitch, you have to have him
get it from the street.

Tommy gets the most powerful vehicles to pick from for FR by succeeding at the
"Freeride Extreme" missions.  The FRE missions are available after completing
the main story missions or by using the gimmick described in "The fastest way to
make all the 'Freeride Extreme' vehicles available for 'Freeride'" described in
the section on "Freeride Extreme."

You can pick locations and adjust traffic, pedestrian, and police patrol den-
sity by succeeding at all the main story missions or using the gimmick described
below in "How to unlock all Free Ride settings...."

He can make money using a taxi to transport people seen waving to him who want
a taxi ride, killing gangsters, blowing up vehicles, and by speeding over 70
mph--after completing the main story missions, that goes up to 105 mph.

  Saving the game

You save the game for $2,000 by right clicking the front door of Salieri's
Bar.

You get one save slot, so if you don't reload the save but start the mission
again, Tommy starts with no money and the same four weapons he always starts
with.  Vietnam Rebel has a method that lets you make an exception to that:

According to Vietnam Rebel, you can have Tommy change his "Freeride" car with-
out losing the money he earned:

  1. Save at Salieri's Bar with the car that you started with.

  2. Exit to the menu.

  3. Start a new "Freeride" with a different car.  If the car you had is a two
door, then select a two door, etc., or your hame may crash (although w45olds
wrote that you can use a car with a different number of doors without a game
crash).  Vietnam Rebel gives this exception: if you have a Lassiter V16 Police,
you can change to a Thor four door then a Schubert Extra Six Tudor then a Bolt B
Tudor (like a pickup, roadster etc.).

  4. Select the same setting (Freeride Night for Freeride Night, etc.).

  5. Load the "Freeride" you last saved and the car you originally selected
should be changed to the new car.

  Settings

City-Small: Tommy can only go to part of the city and not the Terranova
Bridge, Chinatown, Oakwood, Oak Hill, or the countryside.  This is the only
choice available at the start of the game unless you use the gimmick described
below in "How to unlock all Free Ride settings...."

City-Night: Tommy can go to the whole city and countryside (Countryside-
Night) at night.  This is available after mission 8---"Sarah/Better Get Used to
It" unless you make it available earlier by using the gimmick described below in
"How to unlock all Free Ride settings...."

Countryside-Night: this is the same as City-Night except Tommy starts in the
countryside.  It's also available after mission 8--"Sarah/Better Get Used to
It" unless you make it available earlier by using the gimmick described below in
"How to unlock all Free Ride settings...."

City-Daytime: Tommy can go to the whole city and countryside (Countryside-Day-
time) during the daytime.  It's available after mission 14--"Happy Birthday!"
unless you make it available earlier by using the gimmick described below in
"How to unlock all Free Ride settings...."

Countryside-Daytime: this is the same as City-Daytime except Tommy starts in
the countryside.  It's also available after mission 14--"Happy Birthday!" unless
you make it available earlier by using the gimmick described below in "How to
unlock all Free Ride settings...."

City-Night and City-Daytime give you a choice of Little Italy, Central Island,
Down Town, and Hoboken.

Countryside-Night and Countryside-Daytime give you a choice of the China Town
Exit, Dam, Lay By, and Motel.

("Lay By" is a dirt lot at the side of the road.  It's convenient if you want
to have Tommy go to the bridge that has a cliff at one side he can make jumps
from.  To have Tommy go to the bridge from Lay By, have him, facing the road, go
right.)

Until you succeed at all the main story missions, you can't adjust the sliders
for Traffic, Pedestrian, and Police Patrol Density, or play "Freeride Extreme,"
unless you make them available earlier by using the gimmick described below in
"How to unlock all Free Ride settings...."

How to unlock all "Free Ride" settings, the ability to adjust police patrol,
traffic, and pedestrian density sliders, and unlock "Free Ride Extreme" at any
time from the start of the game:

Start "Free Ride" and send Tommy to the east side of the southwest-most block
of the Works Quarter.  Have him go south from it down an alley till you see four
wooden crates (three with one on top) on the right, then send him left to the
yellow-brown door.  Right click when you see an exclamation point icon, the in-
dication that Tommy can commit an action, in the bottom-left corner of the
screen.  Save the game.

Speeding--the fastest way to make money

Tommy gets $100 for every several seconds he drives over 70 mph--after com-
pleting the main story missions, that goes up to 105 mph.

The fastest way to make a lot of money in "Freeride" is to do "Freeride" to
use the gimmick described above to unlock "Freeride Extreme," do FRE to unlock
one or more fast vehicles (the HotRod is fast and can be used as a taxi) or,
even faster, use the "How to unlock all the 'Freeride Extreme' vehicles for
'Freeride'" gimmick described below in the section on "Freeride Extreme," then
do FR with the ability to choose one or more fast FRE vehicles for taxi missions
and driving fast in the country.

You might choose City-Day and take the HotRod to the country north of Hoboken
and drive fast back and forth over the first long stretch of road to make a lot
of money quickly and easily.  There are no police or gangsters in the country in
"Freeride."

  Taxi missions

One way that isn't very risky to have Tommy make his initial batch of money is
to have him give Taxi rides till he has what will leave him with at least a
handful of thousands of dollars after saving at the front door of Salieri's Bar
for $2,000.  It's faster to have him speed in the country, which doesn't have
police or gangsters, but you might prefer taxi missions as a non-risky method
before you've unlocked the country.

After saving the game, he'll have enough money to pay for the health restora-
tion or police fines you may want to pay for after using the riskier ways to
make money.

Once you have Tommy stop a vehicle which can be used for the taxi mission by
someone waving for taxi, you can't control the vehicle till they enter the taxi.
The building or other structure of the destination is briefly shown, the compass
appears and points at the destination, and either a blue X for it appears on the
map or a blue arrow points toward the location if it's beyond the portion of the
map shown.  When the destination is close enough to be indicated by the radar,
the destination is indicated on it by a red X.

If you just want Tommy to drive around and a ped stops his taxi and gets in,
or an unwanted fare has gotten into the taxi while Tommy has parked it and gone
somewhere else, you can have Tommy jack them out of the taxi (RMB).

  Police and gangsters

The rules given in the section on "Police" apply to "Freeride."  Again, the
range of speeds for speeding as a minor or major offense changes after you com-
plete the main story missions.  The range for a minor offense changes from going
more than 40 mph to more than 60 mph and going not more than 70 mph changes to
not more than 105 mph.  A major offense for speeding changes from going over 70
mph to going over 105 mph.

Tommy has to pay $1,000 for a minor offense if apprehended by a policeman.
(As compared to the main story missions, in which being apprehended by a police-
man for a minor offense just causes Tommy to have to go through the motions of
paying, you have to manage his money in "Freeride.")  If Tommy doesn't have at
least $1,000, he's arrested and you fail the mission.

As mentioned in the section on the "HUD," the radar indicates police cars with
blue lines and gangster's cars with orange lines.  They're the main vehicles to
be cautious about.  Either of those types of vehicles is indicated by a red line
on the radar when one of those vehicles is chasing Tommy's vehicle.

There are no police or gangsters in the country in "Freeride."  If Tommy has a
wanted rating or is followed by police or gangsters, they disappear if Tommy
causes the country setting to load up.

Tommy gets $100 for every several seconds he drives over 70 mph--after com-
pleting the main story missions, that goes up to 105 mph.  He'll be considered
as committing a major offense if the police see him doing it.  It's less risky
to have Tommy do it in the country since the police don't appear there.

If Tommy bumps the car of a pair of gangsters, their car, when one of them
drives it, can go unusually fast to try to ram Tommy's car.  The gangsters will
try to kill him, and their Pump-action shotgun, if one of them wields it, can
shoot eight times in rapid succession.

You can try to prevent Tommy from bumping a gangster car with his vehicle but
accidents happen, and you could be very annoyed if they kill Tommy after you've
had him drive a taxi for an hour to make his initial batch of money.  You'd fail
"Freeride" and have to start over with $0.  If you're trying to increase Tommy's
money with taxi fares, consider orange lines on the radar like poison and give
gangster's cars a wide berth.

The gangsters on the attack from a car can be deadly, so I won't promise a
successful defense.  But don't wait till they've disabled Tommy's car and gotten
out of their car to kill him or Tommy's probably had it.

It's like having him shoot a pair of policemen who are in a vehicle except the
gangsters may have a deadlier shotgun--have him try to lure them out of their
vehicle.  Have Tommy keep some distance from them, especially so the shotgun of
the gangster who comes out of the passenger side isn't as effective.  Have Tommy
use the Thompson 1928 to shoot that gangster as he comes out of the car, crouch
and move until the other gangster comes into view, and shoot him.

To have Tommy shoot more rapidly, notably with a Pump-action shotgun, hold
down the key for Backward then hold down the key for Fire as well and he can
fire as quickly as you can add presses of the Jump key.

If the country is available, you could have Tommy drive into it and make the
gangsters disappear.

  Weapons

As mentioned above, Yellow Pete's gun shop is behind the door on the side of
the Twister Theater which faces a parking lot.  The Twister Theater is on the
long dead end road in Hoboken.  It sells those of the weapons listed above which
have prices.

Some of the better weapons that are sold by Yellow Pete:

When fully powered-up, the Baseball bat ($10) is a one-hit knockout and the
Knife ($10) is a one-hit (actually several thrash) kill.  The bat is the only
weapon which can be carried openly without bothering the police but is a large
weapon and you'd probably rather have a couple other large weapons.

  Colt 1911 ($50) (or S&W Model 27 Magnum--$100)--for a mid-distance handgun,
the Colt 1911 has the better accuracy and the S&W Model 27 Magnum is more power-
ful but slower and throws off your aim more.

Pump-action shotgun ($500)--it's powerful at short range.

Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 ($2,000)--it's a good sniper rifle which could be used to
kill gangsters at a long distance.

  Thompson 1928 ($1,000)--it's a machine gun with a mid-long distance range and
the best general use all-rounder.  Use a tap of the LMB at a time since firing
the Thompson 1928 throws the aim up.

One possible outlook on the best weapons for this mission:

If I had to pick one large weapon for Tommy (to avoid having him carry a sec-
ond one openly and attract attacks from the police), I'd pick the Thompson ma-
chine gun.  The Pump-action shotgun isn't as versatile a large weapon because
the range is more limited and the spray of bullets from a machine gun is easier
to hit a target with than the shot from a sniper rifle.  If you want to give
Tommy a second large weapon, pick what you prefer from the shotgun and the snip-
er rifle.

Of the small weapons, I'd recommend both of those handguns, the Knife, and
Grenades.

As you have Tommy kill police and gangsters, possibly pedestrians, collect
their weapons and increase his ammo, you'll also have him pick up the other
handguns, but I'd have him get rid of the Colt Detective Special unless he's out
of the other small weapons.

Grenades and Molotov Cocktails are small weapons that can be purchased singly
for $1,000--the Grenade has a bigger range of effect.  The bat is a large weapon
and the Knife is a small weapon--when fully-powered, both let Tommy make close-
up kills as one-hit kills, but the Knife, being small, is easier to add to this
collection without displacing better weapons.

  Killing gangsters

Tommy gets $500 for each gangster he kills with a weapon.

The gangsters are among the burlier pedestrians, are dressed in black with
black fedoras, and may walk upright or stooped over.  A gangster that's on foot
is armed with a Thompson 1928.  Have Tommy kill him when no policemen are around
by shooting the gangster in the upper body or head.  It's also easy to have Tom-
my stab him in the back with a fully-powered Knife, which is a one hit (actually
several slash) kill.

Trying to run him down from behind is risky since his first reaction to that
(like that of many others in the game) is to jump to the side.  You could try it
with a braking swerve, but if he isn't alerted to attack it's easier to shoot or
stab him.

Pairs of gangsters are armed with two of the following weapons: a Colt 1911,
S&W Model 27 Magnum, or Sawed-off shotgun.  Each pair of gangsters travel in a
black vehicle--either a Wright Coupe Gangster or a Falconer Gangster.  To make
it safer for Tommy to kill them, have him equip the Thompson 1928 and park in
front of their vehicle, or in front of the vehicles that are in front of theirs,
to stop their vehicle without bumping it.

When no policemen are around, have Tommy get near the driver's door and aim
the Thompson 1928 so the driver and passenger are nearly in a straight line--
they won't react while he aims.  Have Tommy shoot the driver in the head or up-
per body then shoot the passenger before he gets out of the car enough to react.

Another benefit of killing gangsters who are in a Wright Coupe Gangster is to
take their car, which is a fast car.

If other gangsters are in the vicinity while Tommy attacks a gangster, they'll
join the attack on Tommy.

  Blowing up vehicles

Tommy gets $100 for every vehicle he destroys with a weapon.  Have him stand
a safe distance away and shoot at the front of the grill (with some cars, shoot
the side of the engine or the gas tank area) to make it blow up.  Black smoke
rises from the hood of a vehicle for several seconds before it blows up.

You might have him use a Grenade or a Molotov Cocktail, either of which costs
$1,000.  If you have him use a Grenade, have him get farther away from the ex-
plosion.  You might have Tommy park in traffic to create a batch of vehicles to
blow up to defray the cost.

You might have Tommy use a Grenade or Molotov ($1,000) to destroy a car that
has a couple of gangsters in it ($500 + $500 + $100) for a $100 profit.  (Thanks
to SalierisHenchmen)

  Restoring Tommy's Health to 100

New Ark Hospital: north of the most northwest T-intersection of New Ark.  Tom-
my gets 100 Health for $1,000.

  Vehicle repair and refueling

Tommy pays $2,000 to get his vehicle repaired at Lucas Bertone's auto service
shop, which is just south of the east end of the Giuliano Bridge.  You can save
repair money if the country is available by having Tommy drive from the city to
the country or vica versa, which repairs Tommy's vehicle for free.

There are three working gas stations (see the "Gas stations" section above).
In "Freeride," a full tank of gas costs $500.  The payment can go into negative
dollars (thanks to Bloviator's walkthrough).  Tommy's vehicle can run out of gas
quicker if the engine of his vehicle is damaged.

If you want to save a damaged vehicle, have Tommy repair it by going from the
city to the country or vica versa for a free repair or take it to Lucas Ber-
tone's repair shop to get it repaired for $2,000 then get it a full tank of gas
for $500.

There's the possibility that the car won't make it to be repaired and get a
full tank of gas.  So if you get a vehicle you feel like saving, save the game
for $2,000 as soon as it's convenient.  If the vehicle gets seriously damaged
after that, you could just reload the game.

  Free vehicle repair

For a free vehicle repair in FR in any setting except City-Small, have Tommy
drive from the city into the country or vice versa to cause the other setting to
load.

  Hidden "Freeride" cars

These vehicles are indicated by little white lines on the radar because
they're unlocked.  See section 11-HFC of Bloviator's helpful walk-through at
the next link.
  http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/371671-mafia/faqs/37141

Silver Fletcher (Pierce Silver Arrow): it's a fast car with good handling that
seats four and has a hard roof to protect Tommy from roll overs and bullets.
Don Morello drives one in mission 16--"Creme De La Creme."  It's by the light-
house in the southeast corner of town at the end of the dirt path.  It's avail-
able in City-Night and City-Daytime modes.  Among other things, you might want
to use it to have Tommy make $100 for every several seconds he goes over 70 mph.
This is the best hidden car to save.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierce_Silver_Arrow

Bolt-Thrower Red: it's a late 1950's style car which is similar to a 1957 Ford
Thunderbird except with bigger fins.  It's red with a white roof.  The Bolt-
Thrower Red can go pretty fast and has good handling, but it has a soft top, so
be careful to not let Tommy roll over (he may die) or get shot at while driving
it.  It's also the car the gangsters get out of before shooting Tommy in the
"Epilogue."

To get it, have Tommy get on the West Marshall Bridge that connects the Work's
Quarter to Central Island.  Have him face east toward the octagonal gray struc-
ture that's beside the north side of the bridge, and have him shoot the west
dark window until the screen goes dark for a fraction of a second.  Then send
Tommy to the alley on the north side of the west end of the East Marshall Bridge
to get the Bolt-Thrower Red.

It's available in all three city modes and the main story missions such as
"Molotov Party."  You can also get a Bolt-Thrower from succeeding at the second
mission of "Freeride Extreme" which I call "Chase the Invisible Man."

Bolt Truck: it's a cruddy truck.  It's hidden.  Good.  It's by a building on a
raised walk that's beside a driveway southwest of the east corner of the south-
most east-west road of the most western block of the Works Quarter.  It has "AT-
LANTIC EXPORT" on the sides like the truck Tommy and Paulie follow in "Just for
Relaxation."  It's available in all three city modes.

Bruno Speedster 851 (Auburn Speedster 851/852): it's a fast two seater with
good handling.  It doesn't have a roof to protect Tommy from rollovers (he may
die) or bullets.  It's added to the garage and becomes available for Freeride
after mission 15--"You Lucky Bastard!"  It's in the alley between the first "L"
and the "S" of "CENTRAL ISLAND" on the Map (Tab).  The Bruno Speedster 851 can
be found in City-Night or City-Daytime.

Lassiter V16 Appolyon: it's a bigger, heavier fast two seater with good han-
dling.  It doesn't have a roof to protect Tommy from rollovers (he may die) or
bullets.  It's in the winding north-south alley in the west part of the block
that's north of the southwest-most block of Down Town.  It's available in all
three city modes.

Lassiter V16 Phaeton: it has the same basic advantages and disadvantages of
the Lassiter V16 Appolyon except it seats four and it's one of the vehicles pe-
destrians own.  Lucas shows Tommy how to pick the lock of one during Tommy's
first visit with Lucas in mission 6--"Fairplay" part 2.  It's in a back lot
(used in mission 18--"Just for Relaxation") which can be reached by knocking or
shooting down two light gray doors which are on the south side of the bend in
the road which is southwest of the "W" of "WORKS QUARTER" on the Map (Tab).
It's available in the City-Night mode.

Lassiter V16 Roadster: it has the same basic advantages and disadvantages of
the Lassiter V16 Appolyon except it becomes available for "Freeride" after mis-
sion 12--"A Great Deal!" and is added to the garage after mission 13, in which
we see that Salieri owns one--"Bon Appetit!"  It's on the upper lot, available
by ramp, of the Lost Heaven Hardware Company, which is southeast from the south-
east corner of the block east of the westmost block of the Works Quarter.  It's
available in all three city modes.

  Also:

It's not hidden, but there's always a Bolt Hearse in front of the Downtown
church (indicated by the brown rectangle below "DOWN TOWN" on the Map--Tab) in
FRE.

****

  "Freeride Extreme"

Tommy starts out in his house, which is the south-most two story house on the
west side of the north-south road south of the first "O" of "OAKWOOD" on the Map
(Tab).
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakwood,_Staten_Island

Tommy's house has a Health Kit with an infinite ability to give Tommy 100
Health, and a door on the same wall is one of the save places of the game.  Tom-
my starts out with a Thor 812 Cabriolet FWD and a Colt 1911.

(One picture on the wall in his house is of the Flatiron Building in Manhattan
in NYC, which looks like the building on the north side of the Y-intersection in
Central Island.  One of the buildings in Staunton in GTA "III" is based on the
Flatiron Building.)
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatiron_Building

If you send Tommy across the street to the man waving his arms, Tommy gets the
message that there are 19 identical-looking men (who wave their arms identical-
ly) around the city--each of the men has a task for Tommy.  (You can just send
Tommy to the other men without talking to this one, if you want.)  Tommy gets
the message "Congratulations!  Bonus car received!" and a bonus car by succeed-
ing at each task.
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=madf3pOyYXo

You can have Tommy do the missions in any order.  But if you have v.1 of the
game, do the invisible man task before any dead bodies, of Speedy Gonzales or
others, are created to avoid the glitch where the invisible man won't continue
past any dead bodies.

If you send Tommy to the Lighthouse door and press the RMB, you get a random
shot of one of the locations of a man who offers, or where a man previously of-
fered, a Freeride Extreme task.

  Freeride Extreme map

The FRE map by Gavel at the next link shows all the important locations of
FRE.
  http://pcmafiagames.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/mafia_fr-fre_map_big-vindplaatsen.jpg

  Saving the game

The game is saved to two save slots reserved for FRE:

  1. the last save made at a man who initiates a subquest/task (thanks to Blovi-
ator for the tip that you can save the game at one of the men who gave Tommy a
task he already accomplished unless the man has been killed) or the last save
made for the accomplishment of a subquest/task

  2. the last save at Tommy's house

If you saved the game in the first save slot after getting a task from a man
and you realize you didn't prepare Tommy properly for it (the car you had him
take for the task is too slow or such), exit the task, load the last save made
at Tommy's house in the second save slot, have Tommy get prepared better, then
have him go to the man to initiate the task again.  You'll have Tommy prepared
better for the new save made in the first save slot.

  Vehicles

Tommy can jack or pick the lock of any car or truck in FRE.  In FRE, Tommy can
get use a gas station but not get his vehicle repaired at Lucas Bertone's auto
service shop.  Tommy can't go into the country in FRE, so he can't use the gim-
mick of going to the country to get his vehicle repaired, either.

Succeeding at a task unlocks one or more cars which Tommy can use in "Free-
ride" and, except for the race cars, the gas-guzzling Trautenberg, and the Flame
Spear 4WD, gives Tommy a car he can save, such as in his backyard parking lot,
in "Freeride Extreme."  The excepted cars can't be driven in FRE once Tommy
exits them.  (You can use a car spawner to have them in FRE.  See the listing
for "MafiaCon" in the "Mods" section.)

When Tommy is rewarded with a car for accomplishing a task, a convenient way
to save it is to have him put it in his backyard lot and save the game in his
house.  Cramming all the FRE cars on the lot makes it hard for Tommy to get into
some of them, though.   I think the game saves the car wherever Tommy puts it,
so you can save some in the yard or on the street in front of his house.

Some of the better "Freeride Extreme" cars

Manta Prototype                                         fast, good handling, protective roof
HotRod, Masseur Taxi, Luciferion FWD  fast, good handling, hard top, can be
used as a taxi for "Freeride"
Masseur                                                      fast, good handling, hard top
Bolt-Thrower                                              fast, good handling, but soft top
The Black Metal 4WD                               slow armored car--keep it moving to have
                                                                         Tommy avoid arrest in FR

The fastest way to make all the "Freeride Extreme" vehicles available for
"Freeride"

In "Freeride Extreme," have Tommy go to the northeast corner of Oakwood, go to
the north-south road, and go to the blue door of the second house from the north
(there's a phone booth in front of it).  Right click to make the Action icon
disappear.  Save the game.

The three jump ramps in "Freeride Extreme"

  - One is at the west bend of the 2nd east-west road north of the name "DOWN
TOWN" on the map.  This ramp lets Tommy, if he's going fast enough, jump east to
west over the East River.

  - One is a north-south ramp that's on the west coast of New Ark north of the
Giuliano Bridge.  It lets Tommy jump over the train track.

  - One is a little east-west ramp that's on the Terranova Bridge.  It lets Tom-
my make a jump on the bridge.

  Invisible car and invisible Tommy

Send Tommy into the construction area above a big "X" of roads, one of which
is the east-west road north of the name "DOWN TOWN" and the other road is a few
blocks north of the name "OAKLAND."  Have him go to a gray structure and go
through the non-solid brown wooden door to get into the blue-green Crusader
Chromium Fordor Blue.
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfFnmAS3jmI

As he drives it, more and more parts of it become invisible till all that's
left of it is a shadow, and if he drives it a bit linger, he becomes invisible,
too.

How to open the monster cave door

You can send Tommy east on the railroad track that's south of Salieri's ware-
house (which is at the north end of the east side of the northern block--the one
mostly surrounded by a thin line that indicates the road--in Hoboken) and go to
a part of the cliff wall that looks like the face of a monster or vampire with
an open mouth with fangs.  The mouth is the mouth of a cave.

You can have Tommy back a truck over the small ledge in the grass, park by the
mouth of the cave, then have Tommy climb onto the truck and get into the cave.
Thanks to "Mafia Easter Eggs" by Underground.
  http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/371671-mafia/faqs/20741

It's easier to use the noclip function of "MafiaCon1.2" or "Mafia Hack V1.03"
(see the "Mods" section) to have him enter the cave through the mouth.  Looking
into the cave from the mouth, there's a tunnel on the left side which leads to a
little door that's locked.  The other side of that door is inside the nearby
abandoned railroad tunnel and barely detectable if you don't know where to look.

To unlock the door, have Tommy turn toward town from the cave entrance, go to
the road, go south, take the second right, and go right over the lot to the door
of an IRONMONGER's shop.  Right click when the Action icon appears.  Have Tommy
return to the ledge by the abandoned railroad tunnel, jump down between the bar-
riers and the opening of the railroad tunnel, and go right along the inside of
the railroad tunnel.  When an Action icon appears, right click to cause the door
to open, and Tommy can go through the little tunnel and into the cave.

The instructions by thewitcher1990 start at 2:46 in the video at the next
link.  He also shows that you can have Tommy back a Thor 810 sedan to go through
the two barriers a bit and exit the car to get past them.

  FRE missions

Again, you can have Tommy do these tasks in any order you want--I just put
them in the order the unlocked cars are listed by in the menu.  The tasks aren't
given names by the game, so I gave them names which briefly describe or suggest
the tasks.

(Something to remember throughout the game: if you have v1.2 of the game, type
"cumdal" at the start of missions to improve draw distance.)

  Subquest/task number
       and name                                     Car(s) unlocked

1 Snipe Three Snipers                      unlocks the Manta Prototype

The guy waving his arms is at the top of several levels of stairs in front of
a building on the third block north of the first "N" of the big  "DOWNTOWN" on
the map.  The Manta Prototype is on the walk ahead of him.

My copy of v1.2 of the game has a glitch that causes the key chosen for Sniper
mode (I use X) to disappear when you load up a game, so go to the Controls menu
and put the key of your choice in the slot for that.

Have Tommy get the task from him then turn and run to crouch at the right side
of the Manta Prototype, which is locked, and take the Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 which
is leaning against it.

There are three snipers, each armed with a copy of the same rifle, shooting at
Tommy for Tommy to shoot (ahead, right, and left are in reference to the direc-
tion the Manta Prototype is pointed):

  - to the right in front of the dark green sign with white letters advertising
"Thempoon's" on the roof of the post office

  - ahead beyond and a little above the left side of the yellow sign with blue,
white, and black letters advertising "Bad Guy Pale Dry"

  - to the left on top of the relatively low light brown building

Put the rifle in Sniper Rifle mode (I use X) to zoom in on the targets.  Keep
Tommy crouching while he shoots the snipers to the right and ahead, then, once
you see where the sniper to the left is, have Tommy stand to shoot him.  If Tom-
my has to retry the task, he starts from his position by the man who gave him
the task, which is conveniently nearby.

Save the Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 for the third task.  You can send Tommy to the
ground below each of the snipers to see if any of them dropped a Mosin-Agant
with more ammo than Tommy's.

2 Chase the Invisible Man        unlocks the Bolt-Thrower

The guy waving his arms is on the south end of the east side of the block of
"ARK" of "NEW ARK" on the Map (Tab).  (It's the corner of the Morello Bar of
"Molotov Party."  The parking lot now has gates that are non-solid.)  Once Tommy
gets the task from him, the invisible man--actually, part invisible, part trans-
lucent--appears nearby.  Tommy has to chase the invisible man, who pauses occa-
sionally for Tommy to catch up with him.

If you have v.1 of the game, have Tommy do this task before any dead bodies,
of Speedy Gonzales or others, are created to avoid the glitch where the invisi-
ble man won't continue past any dead bodies.

Some people left text comments on YouTube claiming to have trouble following
the invisible man due to whatever problems with their monitor or OS, so I've de-
tailed the play by play below:

The invisible man goes north and counter-clockwise through the winding alley
to exit on the south side of the block, then goes west, around the corner, and
north to pause before the second set of steps on that side of the block.

He then runs south, across the street, and south on the sidewalk to pause at
the beginning of the much lighter section of the wall on the left.

He then continues south on the sidewalk and gets into the corner phone booth
to pause.

He exits the booth, goes southwest diagonally across the street to the side-
walk to pause in front of the east edge of a light brownstone building by a
green street light post.

He goes west, across the street, continues west on the sidewalk, and pauses by
the low wall of the near inside corner of the open sidewalk area on the left,
which is under the elevated train track.

He continues west on the sidewalk past the entrance to the ramp for the ele-
vated train, crosses the street, goes up the other ramp, and pauses on the east
end of the waiting platform.

He goes back down the ramp, continues west on the sidewalk, crosses the
street, continues west on the sidewalk, and pauses by the first metal girder
support for the elevated train track.

He makes a 180 degree turn and goes back east on the sidewalk, across the
street, continues east on the sidewalk, goes back up the ramp, and pauses at the
west end of the waiting platform.

He gets on the elevated train headed west and pauses just inside the door.
The train goes southwest over the river to Central Island.

At the first stop (Giuliano Street), the invisible man gets on the waiting
platform, goes northeast (right) and down the ramp, goes clockwise around part
of the base of the ramp, crosses the street, goes past the base of the other
ramp on a street corner that has a rounded acute angle, goes east on the far
sidewalk,

crosses the street diagonally before the second green street light post to go
through the alley between buildings then between red walls, exits to a broad
walk with low raised rectangular planters of grass and trees,

goes west-southwest (right) to go counter-clockwise around part of the planter
ahead, goes east on the broad sidewalk, veers southeast to get onto a similar
broad sidewalk with a low raised planter and go past the near end of the planter
to continue east on the broad sidewalk and past the planter,

goes north at the curb to a regular sidewalk and continues north-northwest,
and pauses for the last time by the gray double doors in the inset area of the
wall on the left.

The game is saved.  Tommy can cross the street to get the Bolt-Thrower Red.

the tail of the invisible man through the whole mission):

3 Rescue the Damsel from the
Chinese Sea Dragon--Timed    unlocks the HotRod

The guy waving his arms is at the northeast corner of the little square south
of the "T" of "CHINA TOWN" on the Map (Tab).  Have Tommy get the S & W Model 27
Magnum from the ground near the man and race across town to the area southeast
of the southeast corner of Downtown (the building just south of the southeast
corner of Downtown is identified in "15-06 You Lucky Bastard!-Escape" as the
Rainbow Gardens Restaurant) to shoot a padlock to release a lady's wrists from a
post before a sea monster eats her.

(The mission starts in China Town, so I figure it's a Chinese dragon.  The
dragon symbol is considered respectfully by many Chinese people.  I mean no dis-
respect if you're one of those people.  The game doesn't give these subquests
names, so call it "Beany and Cecil," or something like that, instead if you
want.)
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_dragon
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNFXEcFIm6k
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2IN8l6YoZw
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beany_and_Cecil

(Option: if you want to see the damsel in distress up close before doing the
task, have Tommy go to the lawn by the sea southeast of the southeast corner of
Downtown, go left to about 2/3rds up the hill to climb up the main creases of
the brown and tan rocks and up to near the top of the rocks, go right near that
edge to go over the highest rocks, and go down the rocks toward the thinner pro-
jection of rocks at the base of them.  You can see the lady on a lower section
of rocks to the right.

(Have Tommy go carefully around the left side of the invisible solid that's at
the crest of the projection of rocks then jump down to the woman.  If you send
Tommy to her right side, he'll fall to a lower section.)

(The lady in distress is also seen dancing with a sailor in one of the two ad-
jacent dining rooms of the Corleone Hotel in "The Whore.")

Have Tommy go to the Chinatown man in a fast car with good handling (the Manta
Prototype will do the job) and with the Mosin-Nagant sniper rifle from "Snipe
Three Snipers."

(If Tommy doesn't have a Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 sniper rifle, you can use "Mafia
Hack V1.03" for any version of the game to give Tommy a new one.  See the sec-
tion on "Mods" at the end of this walk-through.)

A glitch in my version of the game, v1.2, causes the key for Sniper Mode to
disappear from the Controls section of the menu when you load a game, so make
sure the key you want to use (I use X) is entered there and your Sniper Mode key
works before starting the task.

Have Tommy get the task from the man, get the Magnum from the ground by the
man, and drive fast while honking the horn to get traffic out of the way.

One possible route (used in the video by Garyankan): have Tommy go south, mak-
ing a few turns, to get on the road to the Giuliano Street Tunnel, go southeast
and through the tunnel, continue to the T-intersection at the south end of Cen-
tral Island, go east with a couple of turns to get on the East Marshall Bridge,
go east across the bridge and continue to the southeast corner of Downtown, go
past the little building near the corner, and go right to go downhill to the
left stairway landing.

Another possible route (used in the video by pantomime0is0shit): have Tommy go
north to get on the road to the Terranova Bridge, go east across the bridge and
continue east to the T-intersection at the end of the road, go south and past
the 90 degree bend to the west then make the first left and take it to the T-in-
tersection at the end of the road, go right then left then left then right (you
can have him take a short cut over the north-south walk that's west of the gas
station instead) and go south to the southeast corner of Downtown, go past the
left side of the little building near the corner, and go downhill to the left
stairway landing.

When Tommy uses the sniper rifle to View the padlock from the closest stairway
landing to it, the reticle waggles up and down a little more than the distance
from the top to the bottom of the padlock, so have him shoot in the middle of a
waggle.

The landing is close enough to the padlock for the rifle, but have him go
down to the beach for a closer shot with the Magnum.

If you had Tommy use the Manta Prototype (or other car you want to save), have
him drive it then the HotRod to his backyard lot, which is only about a block
away, then save the game.

lady in distress up close before doing the task) and Garyankan:

  4 Shoot Nine Gangsters
in a Lot and Two Alleys      unlocks the Black Dragon 4WD

The guy waving his arms is at the bend in the road southwest of the "W" of
"WORKS QUARTER" on the Map (Tab).  He's by the two light gray doors that Tommy
can knock or shoot down in front of the back lot where the Lassiter V16 Phaeton
can be found in "Freeride."  Tommy has to go through the back lot and alleys to
kill nine hoodlums--six that shoot at him with machine guns from second floor
balconies and three on the ground that use shotguns.

The first four gangsters are on balconies around the back lot ahead.  Have
Tommy use the end of the fence, which is behind the man who gave the task, as
cover to shoot the closest gangster, who's on the balcony ahead.  Have Tommy
move a bit left to shoot the gangster that's farther back and to the right of
the first one.  Have him move into the back lot and use the left side of the
nearby duplex on the right as cover to shoot the two gangsters with machine guns
on a balcony to the far right.  Have Tommy get the Thompson 1928 from the ground
just ahead, equip it, and go across the back lot to go through the alley.

At the T-intersection of alleys,  there's a gangster on the far balcony on
either side--the one on the right is closer.  You might have him go under the
balcony on the right to shoot the gangster on the left, then go left as far as
needed along the far left wall to shoot the one on the right.  (The procedure
can vary--I've needed to deal with the one on the right immediately because he
appeared at the near side of the balcony, and once he appeared on the ground at
the T-intersection while I was still having Tommy attack the initial gangsters.)

Have Tommy continue through the alley on the left from his original position
at the T-intersection.  As he approaches a bend to the right, three gangsters
with Pump-action shotguns will come toward him from the end of the alley.  Have
him shoot them right away while they're in the distance (shotguns are mainly
powerful for short distances) and back up to shoot the gangsters as they come
around the edge of the bend.

The Black Dragon 4WD is by the exit of the alley.  (It has a horn that quickly
alternates between two notes like the horn of the Celeste Marque 500, Disorder
4WD, and Lassiter V16 Appolyon.)

  5 Chase the Flying Saucer--
          Timed                        unlocks the Mutagen FWD

The guy waving his arms is on the west dead end of the T-intersection that's
north of the "U" of "WORKS QUARTER" on the Map (Tab).  Tommy has to drive toward
an alien who appears at the east dead end, who is then beamed up into a flying
saucer-type UFO, then tail the alien's UFO.

The mission is timed, but the timing is generous--15 min.--and the UFO pauses
numerous times for Tommy to catch up with it.  So I wouldn't knock myself out
trying to go fast or use one of the FRE reward cars for it and have to make two
trips to get both cars to the lot behind Tommy's house afterward.

Each time Tommy drives close to the area beneath the location of the UFO, it
flies to another location, sometimes out of view.  If you haven't memorized the
route, you may want to press the LMB to use mouse aim in a vehicle at times to
make sure of the direction the UFO flies.

The location of the UFO can also be determined by the sound it makes, which,
in old Hollywood science fiction fashion, sounds like submarine sonar.  (If it
comes to a fight, the trick is to lure them underwater.  They're advanced in
flying, but not in underwater navigation technology.  Plus, they have little
tiny arms so they can't swim that fast.  Just send one good swimmer with a har-
poon after them and they've had it.)

Have Tommy get the mission at the west end of the T-intersection, go to the
east end, where a UFO rises from behind the red gate and beams up an alien from
the front of the gate, and follow the UFO:

left, left, left to the T-intersection, right, left, go most of the way toward
the next intersection and turn left into an alley which bends 90 degrees to the
right,

go right onto the street, left, left, right, right and continue through the
Giuliano Street Tunnel,

go south through the Y-intersection and turn left at the third left south of
the base of the Y, and go to the traffic light at the end of the road.

At this point, you can have Tommy either:

  - turn left then quickly turn right to go east to the T-intersection at the
coast, where the flying saucer goes due east over the river.  Have Tommy go
right, go right and through the winding alley under the East Marshall Bridge to
the west end of it, then make a hairpin turn to the left to get onto the bridge
and go east over it,

  - or just go right and take the first left onto the East Marshall Bridge and
go east over it.

Have Tommy go left, go left into the alley that's across from the third right,
turn 180 degrees at the end of the alley and go back through it, go straight
across the street and continue ahead on the winding one lane road, go left by
the church to a T-intersection, go right to the T-intersection at the end of the
road, right, left,

go east past the round end of the cul-de-sac (below the "D" of "OAKWOOD" on
the Map--Tab) and continue east up either set of steps (keep the speed up so
Tommy's car doesn't get stuck at the top), go east over the walk, and go east
across the street to continue east on a street to a T-intersection (by the Oak-
wood Junior High School), go right, go left onto a two-lane road, go right onto
the dirt path, and stop at the base of the path to the right, which goes to the
lighthouse, if you want to look at the UFO.

The UFO has beamed a Mutagen FWD down by the lighthouse.  When you send Tommy
toward it, the UFO flies away.

  6 Hurl the Flame Spear
Near Maroon Smoke--Timed     unlocks the Flame Spear 4WD and Flamer

The guy waving his arms is at the southwest corner of the block which has a
one lane road for three of its four sides on the south side of the Works Quar-
ter.

Have Tommy drive the Flame Spear 4WD (white with a yellow and black bolt of
electricity on the tail fin and an exhaust that shoots a bolt of flame) through
or near the tall plumes of maroon smoke that issue from the surface of the road.
(Tommy has to do a survey of this for the Lost Heaven Department of Public
Works.)
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_State_Department_of_Transportation

Slow down to around 40-50 mph for a moment for tough turns.

Have Tommy go straight and take the road ahead without turn-offs around the
eastern side of the Works Quarter, go north then west then north then east
through Little Italy, and turn left before the Giuliano Street Tunnel to go
north,

have him turn right at the slanted T-intersection in southern Chinatown, turn
right to merge onto the road to go east, and continue east across the Terranova
Bridge,

have him go right to go without turn-offs to the south then west then south-
southeast through New Ark into Downtown, go east then northeast to Hoboken, and
go counter-clockwise around outer Hoboken to the T-intersection at the end of
the road, go left,

have him go left to go without turn-offs to the south then west through New
Ark, over the Giuliano Bridge, south through Central Island till nearly at the
T-intersection at the end of the road, then turn right to the last plume of
smoke, which is in the parking lot of the Municipal Building (to report the
roads being on fire, I guess).
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Municipal_Building

The Flame Spear 4WD can't be driven in FRE after Tommy exits it.

The Flamer (dark blue with light blue stylized flames on the engine hood) is
in the parking lot.

The Flame Spear 4WD and Flamer are unlocked for Freeride.

  7 Truck with Nitroglycerin--
         Timed                        unlocks the Masseur

The guy waving his arms is in a parking lot on the east side of the second
block east of the block with "KEN" of "HOBOKEN" on the Map (Tab).

Tommy has to drive a Bolt Truck Covered that's carrying nitroglycerin to the
Works Quarter in four minutes without bumping anything.

Have Tommy drive north to the T-intersection at the end of the road, turn left
and go to the T-intersection at the end of the road, go left and across the Giu-
liano Bridge,

go south through the Y-intersection, take the first right south of the base of
the Y, take the second right to cross the West Marshall Bridge,

go to the T-intersection at the end of the road and go left, go a short dis-
tance and turn right into the alley and continue west on the road beyond it to a
T-intersection, go a bit right and ahead to cross the street and knock down the
light gray doors to enter a lot, go east across the lot and through a narrow al-
ley, and go across the street into the corner lot on the right.

The Masseur is in the lot and unlocked for "Freeride."

 8 Truck with a Bomb--
Over 34 mph                   unlocks the Masseur Taxi

The guy waving his arms is by the little building by the southeast corner of
Downtown (near the beach Tommy went to for the third task--"Rescue the Damsel
from the Chinese Sea Dragon).

Tommy has to drive a Bolt Truck Covered that's carrying a bomb, go 34 mph
within 30 seconds, and not go less than 34 mph till he reaches his destination
in a lot on the south end of the Works Quarter--south of the middle of the south
side of the block that's south of the "W" of "WORKS QUARTER" on the Map (Tab)--
or the bomb will explode.

The idea is probably a reference to the 1994 movie "Speed," in which a bus has
to be driven over 50 mph or a bomb on it will explode.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_%281994_film%29

Basically, have Tommy take wide turns--not braking, sliding turns--by slowing
to around 40-50 mph instead of 30-40 mph.

One possible route is shown in green on the FRE map by Gavel:
  http://pcmafiagames.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/mafia_fr-fre_map_big-vindplaatsen.jpg

Gavel's route (see Garyankan's video below):

Have Tommy, honking his horn as needed, drive west and across the East Mar-
shall Bridge to a T-intersection,

go left a short distance then cut across the corner for a right turn, cut
across the corner for the second right turn, go north on the main road of Cen-
tral Island to the Y-intersection and veer left, continue through the Giuliano
Street Tunnel,

take the road without any left or right turns to the south side of the Works
Quarter, go past the dip in the road, and, just before or after you reach the
metal beam that goes overhead across the road, turn left into the lot.

The route by pantomime0is0shit (see the 2nd video below) is different in that
after having Tommy cross the East Marshall Bridge to the T-intersection, panto-
mime0is0shit has Tommy go right to a T-intersection, go left to the main road of
Central Island, and go right onto the path used on Gavel's map.

The route recommended by Bloviator is different in that after having Tommy
cross the East Marshall Bridge to the T-intersection, Bloviator has Tommy go
right to the T-intersection at the end of the road, go left, take the fourth
right, go left across the West Marshall Bridge, take the third left to the end
of the road, and go right onto the path used on Gavel's map.

The Masseur Taxi is nearby and unlocked for "Freeride."

  9 Chase the Airplane While
Carrying a Beeping Bomb      unlocks the Demoniac

The guy waving his arms is east of the north end of the eastmost north-south
stretch of street of Hoboken.

Tommy has to drive a Celeste Marque 500 with a bomb to chase a plane with a
detonator.  If the range between the car and the detonator becomes greater than
200 meters, the bomb will explode.  The bomb is deactivated when Tommy gets
close to his bonus car--a Demoniac.

Bloviator warns that it's possible to have Tommy get too far ahead of the
plane, which he had Tommy do once on the Giuliano Bridge.

The route is the northern of the two routes shown in blue on the FRE map by
Gavel:
  http://mafiascene.com/downloads?did=439
  http://pcmafiagames.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/mafia_fr-fre_map_big-vindplaatsen.jpg

Have Tommy use the horn to cause vehicles ahead of him to drive to the side.
The Celeste Marque 500, like the Black Dragon 4WD, Disorder 4WD, and Lassiter
V16 Appolyon, has a horn that quickly alternates between two notes (something
like a kind of squeeze bulb horn I've heard used for a kid's bike or by clowns).
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_horn

Have Tommy drive ahead, west, to the T-intersection at the end of the road, go
left and across the Giuliano Bridge, go right on the road then left through an
alley (as a shortcut to avoid the Y-intersection), go right to go northwest on
the west branch of the Y-intersection and through the Giuliano Street Tunnel,
take the third right to go east, and go to the end of the road where the Demon-
iac is parked in front of a garage.

The Demoniac is unlocked for "Freeride."

The task performed by pantomime0is0shit and Garyankan:
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dxCQ4QNEMk
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qN95jwxvg8

The only difference in the route they use compared to Gavel's is that they
turn right at the Y-intersection instead of the right turn before that, left in-
to the alley, then right onto the road to the Giuliano Tunnel.

10 Radial Motion Blur--Timed     unlocks the Crazy Horse

The guy waving his arms is in a parking lot off the road of the first "O" of
"HOBOKEN" about a block south of the "H" of "HOBOKEN" on the Map (Tab).

Tommy has to get into the Trautenberg Racer 4WD on the left side and drive to
a parking lot in south Central Island using a route which is broken up into
shorter destinations.  Each destination is only indicated as a blue X on the Map
(Tab) and as a red X on the radar, and each destination has a separate time lim-
it.

The type of radial motion blur used makes greater speed look like it causes
the scenery around Tommy's car to become elastic and stretched due to Tommy's
location on the screen being pulled farther away from your point of view toward
a distant point at the center of the screen.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_blur
  http://www.tutorialsroom.com/tutorials/graphics/motion_blur.html

The faster he drives, the more radial motion blur is created so the more his
car recedes into the distance.  At the fastest, Tommy's car is tiny in the mid-
dle of the screen, and the scenery around his car car is stretched out so much
that makes it hard to make sure he doesn't run into anything.  The time limits
require you to have Tommy drive so fast that it creates radial motion blur a
lot.

Generally, have him take a chance on greater speed in the middle of the road
when you don't see an intersection or vehicle for a good distance ahead, occa-
sionally slow down briefly for a more normal view, and otherwise try to make out
his immediate surroundings from their compacted appearance in the center of the
screen.

  Destinations:

  - have Tommy go to the intersection below the "K" of "HOBOKEN,"

  - go ahead to the T-intersection, left, and right to the intersection south of
the Market Ave. station,

  - go left to the T-intersection at the end of the road, left to the T-inter-
section at the end of the road, ahead and a bit to the right to cross the street
and go into the lot, and to the part of the lot indicated by the "X" on the com-
pass,

  - go right toward another street of the block, go left from the lot, make the
second right, and go to the T-intersection by the "K" of "NEW ARK,"

  - go left, left to the T-intersection at the end of the road, right, left, and
left to the first turn to the right,

  - make that turn to the right, go right, make a 90 degree bend to the south,
go to the T-intersection at the end of the road, left, and right to the most
southwest T-intersection of Downtown,

  - go right and across the East Marshall Bridge to the T-intersection,

  - go left, right, left into the lot of the smaller of two buildings indicated
with brown at the south end of Central Island, and to the part of the lot indi-
cated by the red X on the compass.

The Crazy Horse is in the parking lot and is unlocked for "Freeride."  It's a
hot rod version of a Bolt Ace and the fastest car in the game, but it can rear
up onto the back wheels with a relatively small increase in acceleration, so you
have to build speed with taps of your Forward key.

See the task as performed by pantomime0is0shit and Garyankan, which can give
you a better idea of how to regulate Tommy's speed to succeed at the task:

  11 Diffuse Nine Dynamite
Bombs--Timed                   unlocks the Bob Mylan 4WD

The guy waving his arms is in the middle of the east side of Oakwood.

Tommy is given a black Thor 812 Cabriolet FWD, but can use a faster car, to
deactivate (right click) nine dynamite bombs.  There's a time limit, which isn't
generous, for each effort.

Have Tommy use a fast car and go to:

  1. the side of the house at the top of the driveway he's on

(then have Tommy cut across a few of the winding downhill curves)

  2. the south side of the south tree in the middle of the Oakwood cul-de-sac

  3. the entrance on the north side of the Downtown church (the north side of
the little vertical rectangle south of "DOWN TOWN" on the map--Tab)

  4. the front of the art gallery (the north side of the big brown indication of
a building at the bottom of Central Island on the map--Tab)

  5. the entrance of the railroad station (the middle of the east side of the
big brown indication of a building on the block south of the block with
"ARTER" of "WORKS QUARTER" on the map--Tab)

(use the east to west alleys shortcut to go to)

  6. the fire service pumping station (the east side of the building that's west
of the westmost block of Works Quarter)

  7. the top of the stairs in Ralph's garage behind Salieri's Bar

(then go east of the bar to use the south to north shortcut to go to the
street that leads to the Giuliano Street Tunnel)

  8. the Armory (the big brown indication of a building north of the east side
of New Ark on the map--Tab)

  9. the huge dynamite bomb in the roughly triangular lot in southeast Hoboken.

Tommy has to drive a Celeste Marque 500 to the front of a building on the east
side of Central Island fast enough to avoid being blown up by whatever it is
that causes explosions behind him during the run.

One possible route is the southern of the two routes shown in blue on the FRE

Byg's method to make it easier is to mod the game so the car doesn't explode.
To do it, you need the "Mafia Data Xtractor" and "BScriptView" (see the "Mods"
section).

Run the "Mafia Data Xtractor" and extract the file "a1.dta - Missions."  Use
"BScriptView," click "File" and a drop down box of choices appears.  Click
"scene2.bin" and a menu appears to allow you to search your computer for a file
to open.  Go to the file Mafia\missions\EXTREME\scene2.bin to open it.  Click
the tab for "Scripts."  Find the script "boom" and click it to highlight it--the
contents of it appear in the window on the right.  Change "explosion 5,100" by
preceding it with a couple of forward slashes to turn it into comment:
// explosion 5,100

  13 Gas Guzzling Trautenberg
Model J                     unlocks the Speedee 4WD

The guy waving his arms is on the southwest corner of the northern of the two
eastmost blocks of Hoboken.

Tommy has to drive a Trautenberg Model J, which quickly uses up the gas supply
it has, to the Fire Service Pumping Station at the west side of the Works Quar-
ter.  So Tommy has to make it to all three gas stations of the town along the
way.

Have Tommy coast when circumstances make it available, average a moderate
speed but try to avoid having to accelerate from a very slow speed, cut corners,
and make wide turns.

To have Tommy use a gas station, have him, facing the gas station, enter it on
the right side and park between the gas station building and the pump so an ex-
clamation point icon appears on the lower left corner of the screen, right
click, and left click "2. Refuel" from the menu.

Have Tommy drive ahead and go right (east) out of the lot and through the cor-
ner intersection, take the next left to the T-intersection at the end of the
road, and go right without turn-offs and through the underpass to refuel at the
gas station on the right.

Have Tommy continue on the same road, go left to the southest corner of Down
Town, go west and across the East Marshall Bridge, go left, cut across the cor-
ner to go right onto the southern east-west road of Central Island, take the
second right, take the second left north of the first "L" of "CENTRAL ISLAND" on
the Map (Tab) (at the DRAXEC and BOYS GRILL buildings), go right, go left, and
make a U-turn to the left into the west side of the gas station to refuel.

Have Tommy go ahead and turn right (east) onto the street, go right to a T-in-
tersection, go right, go right and across the West Marshall Bridge, go right to
a T-intersection, go right, and refuel at the gas station on the right.

Have Tommy make a U-turn left onto the street and go west, go left to a T-in-
tersection, go right to the T-intersection at the end of the road, go left, turn
right past the first building on the right and go through the alley, continue
ahead (west) on the road to a T-intersection, go across the street and a bit to
the right to go knock down the two light gray gates to go west through the lot
and the narrow alley, go ahead (west) on the road, go left around the 90 degree
bend (not forward to the Racing Circuit), and turn right into the parking lot of
the Fire Service Pumping Station.

tion on the trunk, is nearby and unlocked for "Freeride."

  14 Answer Six Telephone Booth
            Calls--Timed                unlocks the Luciferion FWD

The guy waving his arms is on the southwest corner of the block of the "LI" of
"Little Italy" on the Map (Tab).

Tommy has to go to six phone booths to answer (RMB) the phone.  There's a time
limit for each of the six efforts.

The first is nearby on the same corner.

The second is in the north-south alley that runs through the "W" of "CHINA
TOWN."

Have Tommy go through the Giuliano Street Tunnel, make a U-turn left onto
the sidewalk and go northwest to the street, and go left to

the third phone booth, which is at the left side of the road.

Have Tommy go ahead--south-southwest.  A little south of where green grass
appears by the right side of the road, have Tommy go right and down the steps to
park at the end of the lot by the pier, get out of the car, go up the steps, and
ahead to

the fourth phone booth, which is at the back of a white building.

Have Tommy get back in his car and go out of the lot the way he went into
it, go right, take the second left to go north on the main road of Central Is-
land, veer right at the Y-intersection and cross the Giuliano Bridge, make a U-
turn left at the end of the red guard rail on the left to go southwest onto the
walk, turn right onto the street and continue, and turn left into the park.

The fifth phone booth is by the west side of the northern one story white
building with an orange roof in the park that's south of the east end of the
Terranova Bridge.  (All three buildings in the park are indicated on the map--
Tab.)

Have Tommy go back to the road and go in the other direction--down the west
coast of New Ark--to the northeast corner of the block that's north of the "WN"
of "DOWN TOWN," go right, and go left to the east side of the Oakwood cul-de-
sac.

Have Tommy go up the northern east to west steps east of the east end of the
Oakwood cul-de-sac, get out of his car, go into the church cemetery on the
right, and go north from the doors of the church to the third window of the
church then to the tombstone ahead and to the left.

The sixth phone booth is a tiny phone booth beside a tombstone at the Oakwood
church.

The Luciferion FWD is in the Oakwood tennis courts parking lot, which is south
of the east side of the southmost stretch of east-west road of Oakwood and indi-
cated on the Map (Tab).

The Luciferion 4WD, an orange hot rod which can be used as a taxi, is at the
far side of the parking lot and unlocked for "Freeride."

  15 Drive Below the Terranova
Blimp Bomber--Timed          unlocks the Black Metal 4WD

The guy waving his arms is by a Bolt Ace in the front lot of the New Ark Hos-
pital, which is on the north side of the T-intersection that's east of the Ter-
ranova Bridge and is indicated in brown on the Map (Tab).

Tommy has two minutes to get the Bolt Ace Coupe to the other side of the bomb-
ing zone of the blimp stationed over the Terranova Bridge and drive it near the
Black Metal 4WD, which is parked behind the building that's on the north side of
the road just west of the west end of the bridge.

You can try your luck at having Tommy just drive the Bolt Ace west across the
bridge (Garyankan was lucky at that in the first video below).  Typically, the
explosions cause the Bolt Ace to stall (at least you don't have to watch Tommy
get blown up).

It's easier to have Tommy use a Lassiter V16 Fordor or such to push the Bolt
Ace west across the bombing zone and into the lot at the right side at the west
end of the bridge, use the Lassiter or such to drive back east over the bridge,
initiate the task, quickly drive west past the bombing zone, get into the Bolt
Ace, drive it behind the building on the lot, and park by the Black Metal 4WD.
(See the method by pantomime0is0shit in the second video below.)

The Black Metal 4WD (the armored car with a cow catcher in the front) is in
the back lot of the building that's on the north side of the road just west of
the west end of the Terranova Bridge and unlocked for "Freeride."

16 Run, Crouch, and Move the
Crate--Timed                unlocks the Hillbilly 5.1 FWD

The guy waving his arms is beside a crate marked "SCORSESE" in a parking lot
north of the west end of the Giuliano Bridge.

This is like the training scenes in the movie "The Karate Kid," 1984.  The
chores seem menial but prepare Tommy for missions.  There will be shoot-outs in
which he needs to run, crouch, and, in "Molotov Party," can move a crate to
block a door so gangsters can't get out.  You don't want to have him in the
thick of battle and fail to crouch correctly.

Have Tommy run around the block.  (Bloviator warns that the game may require
Tommy to use a larger version of the block that includes going under the Giuli-
ano Bridge.)  Have Tommy do three crouches, pick up the crate (RMB), and follow
the man.  Don't let Tommy get hit by a vehicle, which could cause him to drop
the crate.  When the man says to "Drop it here," have Tommy put the crate on the
ground beside the crate that's already there (I had Tommy put his crate by the
side of the other crate that's facing the street) when the exclamation point
icon appears (RMB).

The Hillbilly 5.1 FWD, which is a rusty pale yellow version of the Bolt-Throw-
er Red, is nearby and unlocked for "Freeride."

17 Kill Speedy Gonzales          unlocks the Flower Power

The guy waving his arms is by the southeast corner of the block of Tommy's
house in Oakwood.

Tommy has to kill Speedy Gonzales--a guy in his underwear who can run so much
faster than anyone else in the game that flames appear at his feet when he
runs (and who's named after the Warner Brothers' cartoon mouse).
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedy_Gonzales

Speedy pauses on the sidewalk that goes by Tommy's house at the corner to the
north.  Once Tommy gets close to him, he runs west to the T-intersection at the
end of the road, goes right, left, right to the T-intersection, cuts northwest
to the next east-west street where he goes goes left, right to the T-intersec-
tion, cuts northwest across the block to the next north-south street where he
goes right to the T-intersection at the end of the road.  He goes left and zig-
zags across the Giuliano Bridge, then (I didn't check this closely) goes south
then north of the west end of the bridge and disappears.

If you have Tommy drive using approximately the same route, you'll probably
have Tommy run over Speedy while he zig-zags over the Giuliano Bridge.

An easy way to have Tommy kill him is to have Tommy use a fast car to go
clockwise around the block his house is on.  Have him drive on the sidewalk once
he's about half a block from where Speedy pauses at the corner.  Have Tommy
speed toward Speedy, who'll run right into the front of Tommy's car.

If Tommy has any ammo left for the sniper rifle from "Snipe Three Snipers,"
(which I recommend you have him save for "Rescue the Damsel from the Chinese Sea
Dragon"), you can have him go north on the sidewalk that the guy who gives the
mission stands on, stop by the mailbox just north of the fifth tree, and use the
rifle to snipe Speedy while he pauses at the corner.   I think you have to get a
headshot to kill him, though, which isn't easy because the reticle waggles
around.  When I tried it, Speedy stumbled for a moment then sped away.

The easiest, fastest way to have Tommy kill Speedy Gonzales:

There are identical duplexes, a pair of residences per duplex, to the east of
the man who gives the task.  Each duplex has a porch with a pair of doors and
steps in front of it.  Have Tommy jack or steal a couple of cars and park them
to block the couple of sets of steps of the second duplex from the south.  It
might be enough to have Tommy park a car to block the north set of steps.  When
the subquest begins, Speedy will be trapped on the porch of that duplex and you
can have Tommy use any weapon on him.

The Flower Power (which has an "ah-ooga" horn and is painted something like
The Truth's Mothership in GTA "San Andreas") appears at the back of the lot of
the guy who gave the subquest and is unlocked for "Freeride."

18 Dunk Five Taxi Time Bombs--
Timed                       unlocks the Manta Taxi FWD

The guy waving his arms is by the west coast of New Ark under the elevated
train trestle.  In other words, he's southwest of the first coastal T-intersec-
tion that's north of the east end of the Giuliano Bridge.

Have Tommy put five Falconer Yellowcar taxis underwater.  In each case, you're
briefly shown the location of the taxi then the pocket watch shows the time Tom-
my has to put it underwater.  You can use the Map in the game but it doesn't in-
dicate where the taxi is and the compass doesn't appear and point toward it.

The location of each of the five taxis is shown in blue on the FRE map by Ga-
vel:
  http://mafiascene.com/downloads?did=439
  http://pcmafiagames.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/mafia_fr-fre_map_big-vindplaatsen.jpg

Prepare before initiating the task by having Tommy park a fast car in each of
the four locations indicated below.  A Lassiter V16 Fordor is fast and heavy and
pushes taxis easily.  You can also make taxis easier to push by putting them in
manual and shifting them into neutral.

  - on the sidewalk near the location where the guy waving his arms will give
the task, which is by the west coast of New Ark under the elevated train tres-
tle.

  - on the lot behind the westmost building of the several buildings by the
southwest edge of Central Island.  Tommy can use the small set of steps at ei-
ther end of the lot to enter the lot.

  - in the lot, but not beside east side of the bridge support (where a taxi
will appear), just south of the west end of the West Marshall Bridge.

Have him park a fourth fast car, possibly a fast FRE prototype, which will be
the initial vehicle used for the mission and the bulk of the mission, behind the
taxi that's by the man who gives the subquest.  If you use an FRE prototype,
don't bang up the front end so it leaks fuel too fast because you can't get ve-
hicles repaired in FRE.

Once Tommy gets the task, he has about a minute and a half to use his initial
vehicle to push the first taxi off the ledge ahead and into the river.

Tommy has four minutes to get to the second taxi and put it underwater.

The second taxi is mostly surrounded by light gray rectangular buildings (in-
dicated with gray-brown rectangles on the map--Tab) in the southwest part of the
big construction area west of (in western?) Hoboken.

Have Tommy park his initial vehicle by the vehicle he parked on the sidewalk
by the man who gave him the task and get into that vehicle.

Have Tommy drive into the construction area at the entrance east of the nearby
gas station (indicated by an orange triangle on the map--Tab), get out of his
vehicle by the second taxi, and drive the second taxi back to the sidewalk which
is by the man who gave him the task--at the west coast of New Ark under the ele-
vated train trestle.

Have him stop the second taxi so it faces the coast from the sidewalk, set it
to manual transmission and put it in neutral gear, exit the taxi, get into his
initial vehicle, and use it to give the taxi a push from behind so the taxi
rolls into the river.

The third taxi is on a driveway, which has curbs and markings like a road but
isn't indicated by a red-orange line on the Map, to a closed off construction
area.  The driveway is at the west side of the north-south road south of the
west end of the Giuliano Bridge.

Tommy has three minutes to put the third taxi underwater.

Have Tommy drive south and turn left into the alley below and at the near side
of the Giuliano Bridge, do a U-turn onto the Bridge and cross it, go right, go
right, go right to about the second tree on the left and park on the right side-
walk by the driveway the third taxi is on.

Have him drive the third taxi to the low wall by the coast, set the taxi to
manual transmission and put it in neutral gear, exit the taxi, get into his ini-
tial vehicle, and use it to give the taxi a push from behind so the taxi rolls
into the river.

The fourth taxi is parked by the steps at the south side of the State Capitol
building, which is indicated on the Map (Tab) by the brown rectangle on the
block south of "TRA" of "CENTRAL ISLAND."

Tommy has three minutes to put the fourth taxi underwater.

Have Tommy drive south to the T-intersection, right to the T-intersection at
the end of the road, left onto the main road, take the fourth right, and turn
right into the lot of the south side of the State Capitol building to park by
the fourth taxi.

Have him drive the fourth taxi right to the north-south road, go south to the
T-intersection at the end of the road, go right, turn left just before the third
tree by the sidewalk on the left to go down the steps, and park at the edge of
the coast facing the coast.  Have him use the vehicle he parked there before the
task to push the taxi into the water.

The fifth taxi is in a lot just south of the west end of the West Marshall
Bridge.

Tommy has four minutes to put the fifth taxi underwater.

Have Tommy drive back north to the south side of the State Capitol building,
get in his initial vehicle, go to the north-south road on the west side of the
building and go north, left, right, and left to go drive west across the West
Marshall Bridge, go left to the slanted T-intersection at the end of the road,
go right to the parking lot, indicated on the Map (Tab) by a couple of short
red-orange lines that branch from the red-orange line of the road, of Lost Heav-
en Port, and go left into the lot to park by the closer of two taxis.

Have him drive that taxi out of the lot and go right, go right at an alley
just before the West Marshall Bridge overpass, and park at the coast.

Have him use the car he parked nearby before the task to push the taxi into
the water.

The Manta Taxi FWD is nearby and available for "Freeride."  Have Tommy drive
it then his initial vehicle, which he left in the parking lot of Lost Heaven
Port, to the lot behind his house and save the game.

  19 Exchange Three Race Cars--
Timed                       unlocks the Caesar 8C Mostro for "Freeride"
                                                  and "Freeride Extreme"

unlocks the Brubaker 4WD, Caesar 8C 2300 Rac-
ing, Caesar 8C Mostro, Carrozella C-Otto
4WD, and Trautenberg Racer 4WD for "Free-
                                                  ride"

The guy waving his arms is in a lot at the west side of the road from Hoboken
to Oak Hill a bit south of where that road is part of a T-intersection that's at
the southeast side of Hoboken.

Tommy has 11 minutes to take the Caesar 8C 2300 Racing race car from a trans-
port trailer,

use it to replace the Carrozella C-Otto 4WD race car on another trailer,

use it to replace the Brubaker 4WD race car on another trailer,

and drive the Brubaker 4WD onto the first transport trailer.

When you have Tommy remove a race car from a trailer, have him park a good
distance away from the ramp to give himself plenty of room to maneuver the re-
placement race car and drive it straight up the ramp onto the trailer.  Don't be
sloppy having Tommy drive up the ramps to the little trailers--each ramp is only
two slats of wood.

You're briefly shown the location of the taxis at the start of the task.  You
can use the Map in the game but it doesn't indicate where any taxis are and the
compass doesn't appear.

Have Tommy take the Caesar 8C 2300 Racing race car from the trailer in front
of him.

He can race west on the second street north of the "TOWN" of "DOWN TOWN" and
use the big ramp to get to Central Island faster.  He'll die if the car rolls
over, but it's not too far from where you'd have him start over again.

Have him drive the Caesar 8C 2300 Racing to the old prison, the LH COUNTY
JAIL, on the north side of Central Island, take the Carrozella C-Otto 4WD from
the car ramp, and put the Caesar 8C 2300 Racing on it.

(The Carrozella C-Otto 4WD is on a car ramp at the old prison on the north
side of Central Island in FRE before you do Task 19 to unlock it, but you can't
use it before the 19th task.)

Have Tommy drive the Carrozella C-Otto 4WD under the west side of the West
Marshall Bridge, take the Brubaker 4WD from the trailer, and put the Carrozella
C-Otto 4WD on it.

Have Tommy drive the Brubaker 4WD to the lot at the west side of the road from
Hoboken to Oak Hill a bit south of where that road is part of a T-intersection
that's at the southeast side of Hoboken.  Have Tommy drive the Brubaker 4WD onto
the first transport trailer.

The Caesar 8C 2300 Racing is one of the cars that's unlocked for "Freeride" by
completing "Freeride Extreme" task 19, "Exchange Race Cars," in v.1 of the game.
According to Muggy at the MafiaScene site, the patches for later versions/later
versions were designed to leave a few things out, including that the Caesar 8C
2300 Racing and Trautenberg Racer 4WD wouldn't be unlocked for "Freeride," even
with the secret door gimmick or a save game.

You could substitute the Caesar 8C Racing for another car in the game with a
mod.  But the easiest way to put the Caesar 8C Racing car into the game, without
replacing another car, is use "MafiaCon."

See the listing for "MafiaCon" in the "Mods" section near the end of this
walkthrough.  You can use "MafiaCon" to spawn the Caesar 8C 2300 Racing any
time.  Thanks to ASN at the MafiaScene site, who recommends:
